There are some things that are hard to explain-- or there are some things that you make sure to work around so you don't have to explain...
Why I like Prairie Home Companion is something I really need to explore a little bit more. It's one of those things where, because I am at work and am not going to listen to music, I have the radio to NPR. This includes the early part of the morning where everything keeps repeating itself and I get to hear death counts 3 times before I even get my 5th drink order.
Then Prairie Home Companion comes on and it's sorta/kinda busy and Garrison Keillor charms me with his very strange, bass-y voice. I'm never entirely engaged because I'm making drinks, but then it'll slow for a few minutes and he'll say something sagey, old-timingly newfangled, and wow my mocha-puckered ears. err something to that effect. It's that time of year where public radio is asking people for money and instead of the standard pleas for my cold hard cash (20 singles in tips), Garrison Keillor tells me about his experience in campus radio as an undergrad. He tells me that out of all the radio stations he has ever visited none of them will win beauty awards, none of them will be spotlighted in Architecture Weekly.
There is Guy Noir. Musical guests that oftentimes aren't my cup of tea. Variety acts. Actors.
And no one talks about Prairie Home Companion, do they? I mean it isn't cool; people skip it for something like "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" probably because they think that Paula Poundstone is funnier, or Mo Rocca has a better voice. Or maybe someone just got done google-picturing Garrison and realized that he is a very funny looking man.
class...
So back from class...
Garrison Keillor is not a very attractive man and I definately don't want to have his babies, if I could, but he is a very awesome radio personality. And yet, no one has been like (and I have a lot of NPR listening friends) dude did you hear what Garrison had to say today? On the contrary I have had people say that they really enjoyed with Melissa Block, Scott Simon, Terry Gross, Kye Rysdall, etc. And I'm pretty sure this has something to do with how much Prairie home Companion feels like this "old time" show that goes back to assigning specific value to "traditional" types of storytelling, varietal shows.
I say all this and then, awhile ago (like months), I find out that they are making a movie, a movie! And of all places I find out about it on joblo.com; a very, just brash popular affair-y website that likes chicks' boobies and hot babes, and totally popular films. And Joblo, or one of his pals, go like, "I have no idea what they are doing with this, but they are making a film based on Prairie Home Companion, WTF hollywood, WTF!!!" Then they slip in that it is going to be directed by none other than Robert Altman. And then they are confused, and I am confused, and what is going on!!!!?!?!?!?!?
So IMDB: "A look at what goes on backstage during the last broadcast of America's most celebrated radio show, where singing cowboys Dusty and Lefty, a country music siren (Streep), and a host of others hold court. "
Woody Harrelson
Meryl Streep
Tommy Lee Jones
Lindsey Lohan
John C. Reilly
Virginia Madsen
Kevin Kline
Lily Tomlin
Robin Williams playing himself.
Linda Williams playing herself.
Garrison Keillor playing himself.
So what a god-damn ridiculously talented cast. It is impossible, (isn't it?), to assume that none of these brilliant people like (as much as I do) prairie home?!
And now I'm thinking things like is my perception of prairie home totally crazy?
another interruption.....
Or maybe Prairie Home has always been awesome and none of this warrants as serious consideration as I am giving it. I don't really know much about its history.
Maybe all those who like prairie home companion can rise up and make t-shirts with garrison's face and a microphone. I just want to know what people think about it.
