You know what I want right now?
I want to see a truly dark night sky. Not the fake night skies that we see for most of our lives. The ones lined with a tinge of light from random buildings and street lights. Not the ones semi-lit with suburban light pollution.
I want a truly, completely dark sky. So dark that I can see the entire Milky Way, instead of just a handful of stars scattered upon the heavens.
Isn't it sad, that most of us have never even glimpsed the Milky Way before? Imagine, before electricity was invented, EVERYBODY knew what the Milky Way was. Everybody got to see it every night. Our ancestors, long gone, were inspired and awed by its beauty.
I want to see the sky as it is without light pollution:
or even with just a LITTLE light pollution:
but unfortunately... this is what I usually get to see:
It's sad that nobody really appreciates how sad it is that we never get to witness such beauty on a nightly basis. Did you know that very few pockets of regions on every continent remain completely free of light pollution?
My Mom went to Tibet last year... And told me of how wondrous the night sky is at that kind of elevation sans light pollution.
A-fucking-mazing. I want to go to the Australian outback and see it. Or Africa. Or travel to Yukon and see that along with the Aurora Borealis.
My life would be so much closer to being complete.
