make a wish.. take a chance.. make a change.. breakaway.

a heartbeat. a whisper. a voice in the wind. a tinkle. a melody, a cry within. a tear forms in her emerald eyes, glistening as the last rays of sunlight pierce through the twilight sky, signifying the end of yet another day. tall, eerie silhouttes dance mysteriously--shadows cast by the old, majestic oak tree. to her, the silence is deafening, although the chaotic tunes, bustles, and screams of the night city plagues the air like leeches on skin. but she hears none of it. all she hears is silence. silence like a vast, empty vacuum. like a tiny boat sailing across the open, endless ocean... silent like the wind. silence... like nothingness. her breath is squeezed out of her fragile lungs. she gasps for air and a sob reluctantly escapes her throat. her fingers curl up towards her palms, forming tight fists. knuckles white.

she stares ahead. stares blindly at the flickering neon lights illuminating the advertisement boards lined neatly across the sidewalks. stares at the leaves of the oak tree swaying like the wind. stares... but sees nothing. nothingness.

all she sees are the million fragments; bits and pieces of jumbled-up memories passing through her mind like a movie rerun. a flashback. she hears the ring of her own laughter. tastes her own fear. devours her pain. she sees images. split-second still frames of a face. a face she cannot forget.. a face she needs to forget but yet doesn't want to. a face that laughs silently. a face that smiles at her. she cringes... at the mere image of that smile. all at once, a thousand more images hit her like a bolt of lightning. almost like multiple shots of a camera. a mind-camera. like a machine gun shooting rounds of ammunition at her heart. her fingernails bite into her skin; but she does not realize. does not feel. nothingness.

a final image of that face stays invisibly in front of her glistened eyes. a smiling face. an angel smile. a beautiful smile. an unforgettable smile. she blinks, and the tear falls from her eyes like amber-coloured autumn leaves falling off tree branches. falling.. falling.. and lands on her white knuckles. she raises her eyes toward the sky. sees the last pale sunbeam fade in slow-motion. as the sunlight fades a smile tugs at the corner of her delicate lips. as the sunlight fades her smile grows wider. her fingers relax--her fists unclench.

she stares toward the heavens and genuinely smiles. she smiles... and the first night star twinkles in the distant sky. a white star. a symbol of the continuity of life. she stares blindly at the star. and nothing plagues her mind any longer. not the face. not the smile. not the pain. just... nothingness. nothingness like tranquility. nothingness like the calm, steady seabreeze. nothingness like... peace.
