Maya loved his friends. A lot. But even then, he still had moments he’d go off on his own just to escape the noisy bunch. He was doing one of his solitary strolls when Tokimune Sayuri came up to him, all on her own.
They haven’t talked since the rooftop incident when he stayed with her till Fumie and the others found her. And he hadn’t a clue of what exactly he should be saying to her now. Especially after telling her about the past he’d rather forget.
It was Sayuri who spoke to him first. “Hey,” she started, looking at him, testing to see if he was listening.
He looked down and away, suddenly conscious about exposing any more of himself to her. It was different then, because he knew she needed it. Now, when she looked stronger and all in one piece, he felt like the broken one.
“Hey,” he replied anyway, sparing a quick glance her way, face still pointed to the floor.
She gave a small smile, putting her hands on her hips, looking livelier than he’s ever seen her. Or maybe, he’s just never noticed how she was before.
“I realised I never said thanks.”
Maya blinked, meeting her eyes again. He didn’t notice that neither. “It’s fine. It’s no big deal,” he replied, offering a smile in return to her genuinity. “If you need someone to just be with you, I wouldn’t mind doing it again… Though I guess you’d rather ask Fumie…”
He grimaced. That was stupid, she’d obviously confide in Fumie now that she knows the girls are there for her.
Sayuri was pleased to hear that anyhow, her smile spreading to a grin. “Thank you,” she said with a bow, all manners like the lady they trained her to be. It was somehow ironic and somewhat uncomfortable. Maya’s gaze fell to the floor again.
“I was thinking… As thanks, I’ll buy you a meal.”
Maya perked up at that. “A meal?” he repeated, the hint of a smile tugging at his lips.
“Ya-ki-ni-ku be-n-to~” she said. Every syllable resonating in his mind like a cheap love comedy with sparkly special effects.
“The one you promised us last time if we followed the rules?” Maya asked in disbelief. “The expensive one?”
“Yep.”
It was like the party switch just went on in his mind. “Thanks, boss!” he replied, bowing to her like she was a yakuza gang leader. “I’ll be in your care!”
Sayuri laughed for the first time he’s ever seen her do it and it was surprisingly pleasant. She punched him lightly in the chest. “Don’t call me ‘boss’! It’s just one meal!” She shook her head. “You’re surprisingly simple when it comes to food, huh?” she noted for the second time that year.
Maya shrugged. He couldn’t deny that he loved a good meal, especially if it was free.
“Free after school today?” she asked.
With a nod from Maya they made their plans for the day.
It was only after they went back to class, that Maya realised it was the first decent conversation he’s had with a girl for a long time, and maybe this merge wasn’t going to be so bad after all.
