“Right here, is where the soldiers practice sword fighting,” the guide told the travelling priest, Jesse, who came from the West to spread Christianity to Japan. It was the Meiji era, when Japan started to welcome their Western guests, and the army was trying out a transition from swords to guns. Naturally the missionaries like Jesse were similarly welcomed.

Jesse watched as boys in pairs sparred with each other with bamboo blades, striking and parrying with fine-honed skills. And most skilled of all, was a male with long black hair that was tied in a ponytail. Sweat ran freely down his muscled chest, his lightweight yukata flapping as he advanced, almost showing more skin, but never really doing so. Jesse gulped as his eyes followed the trail of a single sweat drop as it rolled down his chin, neck, chest, and finally disappearing into the collar of his yukata.

“Is he the captain?” Jesse asked, gesturing to the male. He wasn’t exactly interested at the time, just curious.

“Ah, you mean Hokuto Matsumura? He’s our ace swordsman, yes…” the guide replied. Jesse noticed how he refused to comment on his ranking, but decided not to pry. It might be politics, and that was not his business.

At the mention of his name, the swordsman turned to study the onlookers momentarily. Then with a smile, he knocked the weapon of his sparring partner’s hands, and shot Jesse a wink.

Jesse felt his heart skip a beat and wasn’t sure if it was from the shock of the display of skill, the look of pride on Hokuto’s face, or Hokuto’s smile. Or perhaps it was the wink. Or the threat Hokuto posed if he was armed with a sword. Yes, that has to be it.

A sigh of discontent from his guide cut Jesse out of his thoughts. He cleared his throat. “Let’s move on.”
