CHAPTER 2
Shizuka saw Jun at the subway every morning for two weeks straight. Half of the time they will talk, half of the time she will act as if she didn’t see him.
The feeling of edginess was too much.
But at the same time she enjoyed seeing him. It was like with her bosses. They were drop dead gorgeous and talented, and those were reasons enough to get a bit silly. But at the same time they had something that pulls you towards them. Something that could make you listen to them, follow them and care about them.
And Matsumoto-san had that too.
She listened to him, in her way of course, she followed any of his recommendations and she cared about him. Maybe too much.
Definitely too much.
Jun followed Nino’s words.
He took his time.
In a subway/lunch conversation basis, he started to learn about Kimoto.
Hell, he even started to take care of his lips, so Kimoto-san had something nice to look at.
At lunch, the conversation was always lead by Nino. Which was good and bad. Nino was shameless, so he asked all sort of different things, from her childhood, to how her last boyfriend was. The bad part was that Nino didn’t ask some things he wanted to know. Like how is her day life, what she thinks about when she designs and how is it.
How does it feel to not being able to ear?
But how you ask that?
That day they met at the elevator. Matsumoto bowed at her politely, as always, with a shy smile pocking the corner of his lips. He was carrying a suitcase on his right hand, and a jacket on his left hand. Quickly he changed his jacket from one hand to the other and helped Shizuka with the 5 big books she was carrying. She thanked him and took off her cellphone. When they reached floor one, she showed him the screen of her cellphone [ I have to drop this ones at the public library outside our subway station, will you help me caring them there?] His face looked ecstatic when she saw him mutter a yes.
She didn’t allow herself to interpret it. He was just helping her.
Jun was thankful to find two seats at the subway. He considered himself a physically strong man, but the 4 books he was caring where insanely heavy. For what he saw in the cover of the one on top, they were all about animals. He would ask her later what she was doing with them. As always, he was curious.
Kimoto-san sat next to him, and opened the book she was caring. Jun wasn’t going to allow that. He took the notepad that he saved in the outside pocket of his briefcase just for this porpoise.
[How was your day?]
And that simple question, got them in to a no ending conversation for the 45 minutes of subway ride.
When they arrived at Sendagi station, Jun had already used one third of his notepad. He understood why she was caring so many nature books (For a project at work she said) and he found out what she did the last summer (Hawaii with her parents). He also couldn’t stop starring at her smile each time she liked Jun’s answer. Or at the elegant strokes of her writing. And all that staring almost leaves him inside the subway. He came out of his daze after hearing Kimoto’s familiar voice “Jun-kun!” The commotion distracted him a bit, but he didn’t ignore how she called him Jun-kun. Not Matsumoto-san.
Once in surface, Kimoto-san guided him to the public library where she got the books. Jun had no idea there was one. And he wasn’t planning on visit it again, not after meeting the flirty guy who attended her. He didn’t only used sign language to talk to her, which gave him an irrational feeling of jealousy, he also stared at her back for a long minute when she walked away.
He hated him now.
He was just giving him a murderer look when Kimoto called his attention by pulling his sleeve. He loved when she did that. “Let’s go” She said, pulling him outside the library. Jun walked with her, but threw a last stare at the guy. He was very close to send him an I’m watching you sign.
His sleeve was pulled again [ Let me invite you dinner] He read in the touchscreen in front of his eyes. He blinked in mild amazement giving his positive answer automatically.
They ended up in a sushi bar two squares away from the subway station. They sat in a tiny table next to the window, and the first thing Jun did was to place the notepad on top of the table, ready for the conversation. Kimoto smiled at him and graved the notepad first [Thanks for helping me, Sorry if it was too much?]
[Don’t worry, I’m strong, see?] Jun patted his left upper arm, tightening it, just to make his point clear. She laughed, but Jun liked to think that the way she stared at his arms, and chest, wasn’t his imagination. The air around them got a bit weird, so Jun graved the notepad fast to avoid silence [What are you going to do this weekend?] That was an honest question. It was Friday after all. He could be curious about that. Kimoto read the pad, but didn’t grab the pencil. She stared at Jun, then at the notepad, and then back at Jun. She took a deep breath and grabbed the pencil. Jun was more curious than ever. [I will tell you, but don’t laugh. I rent a room at the Radisson Hotel for the weekend] Jun wondered why he would laugh at that. More than feeling amused by it, he was full of questions [ Why? I mean…that hotel is here in Minato right?]
[I like hotels. And the Radisson has this beautiful room where you can see Tokyo Tower next to your night stand. And also hotels are places where people pass by, so you don’t have to get used to them. You don’t need to adapt to them, they adapt to you. That’s so comfortable for me] Jun read the note a couple of times. Trying to grasp the meaning of it by himself “Because I’m the one that’s always adapting” Said Shizuka, helping him out apparently. Jun gave her a meaningful stare, he understood what she said. [And what you do there?]
[Room service!! Also I watch movies, I have lunch at the restaurant, I hit the bar and I take 2 baths a day. Very bad for the environment, but I can't resist]. Their food arrived and they changed subject, but Jun had something clear now.
Once he arrived home, he turned on his computer and wrote down.
Sign language courses.
Because he could have bought a book like Nino. But that wasn’t enough.
He clicked the link of a foundation that offered courses for family and teachers ‘That want to learn how to communicate with hearing impaired people’ Jun wasn’t family, or a teacher, but he needed to learn.

Shizuka was about to finish her Saturday cleaning when she caught by the corner of her eye the computer screen lighting up. She went to check, and found a pleasant surprise. Her childhood friend, Sho, had send her a video call request. Apparently he was back from his honeymoon. She clicked the green button and stared at the screen waiting for his friend to appear. And when he did, she was pleasantly surprised, he had some color in his face, a tacky earing in his earlobe and the shining gold ring in the hand he was using to wave at her - Hello there Shizu-chan!-
-Hello my married friend - She signaled, putting the tip of her pinky’s together.
They ended up having dinner at their usual spot. Sho spend the first 30 minutes telling her the marvels of Hawaii. How much fun they had, how much they ate and how that earing ended up in his ear. - Also if that woman is not pregnant yet there is something wrong with me -
- Too much information Sho-kun - Complained Shizuka, kicking Sho under the table. - What about you? How's the new job?-. She was sure her eyes light up once she started talking about her new bosses, her new work place, her new coworkers and her new projects. And she felt grateful to see how thoughtfully her friend listened to her.
They had already emptied the second glass of beer when Sho brought up a new subject - Did you get a boyfriend in my absence?- She almost choke with her own saliva. Almost. Is not that she was surprised by the question. She was used to Sho's big brother complex, and she was used to that expression on his face, an expression that said 'Is there someone that I should give my approval to?'. She told him she had no boyfriend - But there is someone - Sho moved away his beer with a serious countenance and told her to go on. - He works in the same building, event organizer, he is friends with my boss and we have lunch together almost every day - Sho nodded twice, still frowning - He is really handsome a gentleman too and I love how I can read every single emotion and thought on his face. And always those emotions are really good emotions I don’t see hate fear or envy - Sho erased the frown from his face and replaced it with a smile.
Two days later, Sho and his wife Keiko, went to her office to pick her up for dinner "I'm so sorry Shizu-chan, Sho made me come, he wants to see this Matsumoto" She finished her sentence in a whisper so the people around them couldn’t hear her. “It’s alright” She said to her, narrowing her eyes at Sho - Don’t give me that look, It’s my duty - Shizuka rolled her eyes and gave them a signal to follow her. They got in to the elevator, and she showed her friends her new office and introduce them to her co-workers.
Ohno let her leave earlier so she could go with her friends, which relieved her, in that way they wouldn’t run in to Matsumoto. And since he worked two floors above her, the possibilities where less.
But no.
Just when they were leaving, Ninomiya arrived at the floor, with Matsumoto following him. There was a second where the air felt a bit awkward, but Ninomiya eased it with his superpowers. Shizuka introduced her friends, and flinched when she saw the way Sho stared at Matsumoto-san. Too scary. She pinched his arm, and Sho looked away, giving her a fake smile. She looked at Matsumoto, trying to check if he saw how Sho looked at him, and apparently he did. Keiko was the one who came to her rescue this time, distracting Matsumoto, and Sho. “I love your brand Ninomiya-san, I buy all the home accessories that I need at your main store in Shibuya”
“Ah, thank you very much, now that your friend will be designing a big part of it, I hope you keep choosing us” He send her one of her flirty looks and Sho had another thing to worry now, so he stopped sending bad vibes to Matsumoto. “Ohno-san told me to leave, so I’ll be heading earlier” Said Shizuka with her low voice - It’s alright Shizu-chan, Thanks for your work and it was really nice to meet you guys - Nino walked inside the floor, but Jun didn’t followed him. He remained in his place, hesitant looking at Shizuka. He took a step forward and spoke to Shizuka first “I guess we aren’t going to ride the subway together, I hope you have a good time” and then he turned to Sho and Keiko “It was very nice to meet you both, I hope we can meet again” He bowed at them and hurried to reach Nino. Shizuka looked at her two friends, and found Sho and Keiko pretty dumbfounded.

“Good morning, my name is Aiba Masaki, and I’m your teacher. I have been teaching sign language for 6 years, and one thing that I always like to ask is what brings you guys here?” Jun jumped on his seat, what brought him there?
Before he realized it, it was his turn. After all, it was a small class. “Matsumoto-san? Tell us, what brings you here” Jun looked around, finding all eyes on him. He coughed, cleaning his throat and move uncomfortable on his chair “Well, I came here because I need to learn…how to communicate…with the girl …I…like” By the end of the sentence, his voice was a pathetic whisper and he could feel his face go red when he hear the few ‘Aww’ around the classroom. “Well, believe it or not, I always have one student that comes here with that reasons, Don’t worry, we will reach the I like you and I love you chapter soon” Jun wished he could die right there.
Once the class was over, Jun was actually surprised of how good it went. In 2 hours and a half, they went over all the basics in conversations and verbs. Aiba was a very good teacher, always helping them make the movement when they couldn’t understand how and making some clarifications, specially related to double meanings. Jun closed his notebook with a smile pocking his lips. He felt like now he could understand Shizuka a bit more. “Matsumoto-san?” Jun looked up, surprised, still a bit resentful with the guy in front of him “Aiba sensei”
“Sorry If I embarrassed you earlier”
“It alright, it was a very good class” Aiba jolted and smiled brightly at him “I’m glad you liked it…Matsumoto-san, you mind coming with me, just to chat a little bit?”
“Are you going to ask me about my love interest” Aiba only smiled, and Jun followed him anyway, already feeling a bit embarrassed. “What’s her name?” He asked as they walk down the stairs “Kimoto Shizuka”
“Shizuka? That’s an appropriate name (1), where did you met her?” Jun played with the edge of his notebook, feeling incredibly shy, but Aiba’s honest curiosity made him feel a bit relaxed, despite everything “At work, well, she works in the same building, she is a designer” Aiba nodded, opening the main door for him, and following Jun as they leaved the place “And how does she communicates?”
“Well, mostly writing…I guess with her family and friends with signs, and she speaks, but not that much, I think she doesn’t like it, oh, and she can read lips”
“No, they don’t like talking, since they can hear themselves is quite uncomfortable, but apparently she can communicate very well, and she has a career, she is quite independent, isn’t she?” Jun nodded, thinking about her, going over every single memory he had of her. “So why you want to learn sign language, it seems to me that she can communicate quite well” Jun saw the meaning behind that question. Especially since Aiba had a childish smile on his face, and it was kind of contagious. He ended up with the same smile as he answered him “I guess I just want to be at her level, her high level you know?, the other day she said something that got me thinking, and is the reason why I decided to come here…She is the one adapting all the time, learning how to read lips, which I imagine is quite hard, having to quit places and people because they didn’t collaborate with her adapting process…this time I want to be the one adapting, the one learning from her, maybe she will appreciate that, I don’t know” Aiba patted his shoulder, lately people has being doing that a lot, and took out his wallet “Here, my business card, if you need help in anything, books, videos, or even extra classes, they will cost you a cup of coffee though, what you’re doing is very thoughtful, she will appreciate it for sure ” Jun traded cards with him and exchange an already friendly good bye with him.
Jun rode the train to his house engrossed in his new book. On Monday he will be able to say hi, ask her how her weekend was, and wish her a good night, just with the movement of his hands.
(1) Shizuka means quiet in Japanese.
