The day has finally arrived, boys and girls! Two years of waiting has finally paid off in the form of the 607-paged Half-Blood Prince which I devoured in 5 hours yesterday and which I have mixed feelings about. So I am going to do what any hardened fandomer would do and I am going to review it. Spoilers ahoy! (No, seriously. If you read behind the ( Read more... )

I've written the same thing over...and over...and over...

I thought it was cool that JKR had the nerve to put the word "slut" into a children's book.

I agree with the slut thing.

I bet all the parents reading the book to their children had a "oh ... we won't read that word" moment and said "scarlet woman" instead.

One of the more intense parts of the books...
Gaunt: You-SCARLET WOMAN!
Merope: Ouch, you sting me with my words.

The woes of the fandom. abundantfear July 18 2005, 01:58:40 UTC
I also found this book slightly annoying in places, and for the first time since collecting the books (in 1999 ... six years ... it feels like fifty), I had to persuade myself not to skip ahead to "better" parts (a nasty habit of mine when reading other books). I never normally have that inkling with Harry Potter. Nevertheless, I did enjoy it and love it because I loff all these characters so much - and really, let's face it, I'd read about them watching an ant walk up the wall. Yes, I am that sad ( ... )

Eek! Look how shamefully long it has taken me to reply to your review of HBP! I am appalling and hang my head in shame. If you would care to throw stones at me from the other side of the world then it would bve truly justified ( ... )

I, like most everyone, do have mixed feelings about the book. Though I adored the progressing relationships of many characters, some of the time there was just SO much romance I felt I could hurl. However, I was delighted with the Malfoy dynamic, the mountain of backstory knowledge, and the fact that Harry was not a total prat, as many fanfic authors would often make him when they wrote HBP stories, creating Harry centered on grieving etc. I think Harry handled everything quite well ( ... )

Hey there, sorry I've taken so long to reply to your review but I have been pathetically busy and lazy.

I agree with you when you say that the amount of romance was nauseating. I couldn't believe the number of couples that suddenly appeared in this book. From Bill and Fleur to Lupin and Tonks and of course Harry and Ginny which I thought was rather badly written and unconvincing. The only successful maturations of characters in this book, I thought, were Harry and Malfoy who were both finally revealed to have more dimensions to their characters.

I can't wait to find out what happens to Snape and whetehr or not he was evil. i personally don't want to believe he was but I sense that JKR is going to further complicate the whole issue in the last book. I can just see it being all about divided loyalties.

Thanks for lending me your thoughts, they were really interesting!

I have to say my favorite part- or aspect or moment rather- was the insight into the Malfoy family. It changed up the thoughts that we previously had concerning the Malfoys and humanized them greatly. I felt SOOO bad for Draco when we were shown it was him crying in the bathroom. And when Harry attacked him on instinct with the "sectusempra" or whatever the curse was exactly was astounding but wonderful to; i think if Snape hadn't shown up Harry would have lost it to some degree because he seemed to breaking out over Draco quite a bit ( ... )

I think the same, and the book was made the richer for the extra information we were given. I was getting very frustrated with JKR's prolonged refusal to flesh out the characters of the Slytherins for so long and I really think that some expansion on the stereotypes was merited. She did it well, though.

I see what you're saying about Ginny being the best for Harry but I still can't bring myself to like the pairing. After the obvious prefernce of Malfoy I would have put Harry with someone like Luna who isn't so deeply enmeshed in so many aspects of Harry's life. Failing that I think it would be more plausible if he were to try to seize the day and become something of a ladies' man, thinking all the while subconsciously that he might not live to have to explain himself.

Thanks for your thoughts, and I'm sorry I took so long to reply to them!
