Autumnal layering

Today is decidedly autumnal up in Scotland and I'm enjoying being able to layer again without over-heating (well, okay, almost without over-heating, I was a tad toasty by the time I'd marched to the post office and back). I'm wearing ( Read more... )

I suspect it is not so much the weather that varies as the jackets (we do not get tropical storm style rain as a general rule though). In the UK, 'stylish' coats are only generally weatherproof if you can afford something very expensive. If you want something properly waterproof that doesn't cost loads, you are much better off with a hiking jacket. Most people (I suspect) buy showerproof coats and use umbrellas (I leave these everywhere and it is usually too windy for them here anyway) or don't spend that much time walking in the rain.

I have flat feet, very narrow ankles and long toes which are the widest part of my foot. Shoes are often too deep for my feet and rub my heels. I can't wear heels or ballet pump style things because they make my feet ache and I need a strap across the middle of my foot and decent support because I turn my feet when I walk and go over on my ankles really easily. Boots are easier because they are more supportive and I can generally just shove a thick pair of socks on and because they don't have a seam right across my heel. I have the opposite problem at the moment of not being able to get knee-high boots that are narrow enough in the calf because many styles are designed for you to tuck jeans into. Thus, the wonder of the calf height biker boots, which can be looser without looking like leather wellies! (and have buckles to make them narrower).
