Style by degrees

I've probably spent more time thinking about what to call this post than I have writing it. Six degrees of separates, dressing by degrees, scroll down for fashion, etc. Feel free to add your own :)

I took part in a graduation ceremony the other day.

If your robes are black, wearing a black suit underneath is about as chic as you are going to get. I took a gamble with this (hot summer's day, black suit ... ) and it paid off.

If your robes are several different colours and what you are wearing underneath is differently-coloured again, you run the risk of looking a bit like a court jester.

If you are wearing stiletto heels and the tarmac is very warm because it's a hot summer's day, you will, without warning, slowly sink backwards into the tarmac. This is an unnerving experience.

If you are lucky, warm tarmac can be pulled off stiletto heels while still warm, like treacle toffee that hasn't quite set. Removing it from one's fingers is trickier.

Implausibly, I look good in a mortarboard.

It's very hard to look good in those Henry V-style hats.

A white suit under black graduation robes can work, but you have to really mean it.

I'm not sure that a black suit under black robes with white trainers will ever work, but I remain happy to be persuaded otherwise.

stylishly yours, clothes, academia
