my new fave

this is the work of unica zurn from the 30's and early 40's. she was interested in the 'automatic drawing' of surrealist andre masson, but somehow she totally transcends that for me. she makes it less of a simple philosophical/mental exercise and more of a japanese woodblock meets children's book acid hallucination in a constrictive black button-up 30's dress with a slice of inuit folk drawing sort of thing. she was hans bellmer's girlfriend and in 1970 she jumped out of the window of their shared apartment to end her depression.
her work is absolutely gorgeous and so is she.
