The Passionate Longing of Sonata

Chapter 2- Painful Memories

It’s going to be seven months since his father’s marriage that JaeJoong finally feels comfortable being in the presence of YunHo’s mom, Hyo-Lee. Hyo-Lee is a woman of kindness and gentleness; never ashamed to show her affections and fondness to people she loves, including JaeJoong. Nothing like the old stepmother in fairytales that he used to read as a bedtime story and definitely not like what he had imagined where they would poisoned your apples or put snakes into your bed while you’re asleep though he once insisted the old step mom does that. Hyo-Lee is everything except JaeJoong’s definition of a step mom and that totally erases his whole perspective towards them.

He rubs his temples. Why? Why am I still thinking about that woman? She was never good at showing her sentiment to children like him who at that time between the ages of seven to ten needed to be pampered and cherished. He had praised his father occasionally for making the right choice in marrying Hyo-Lee. Everything is shown the moment YunHo step into the house where he would be given full attention. Too much till it pricks the feeling of jealousy in JaeJoong’s little heart.

In fact, JaeJoong could feel that he too has a place in her affections. It’s just that

he could not bring himself to fully accept the woman as a mother unlike his father which had been well accepted by YunHo since day one. Maybe I still need a little more time. He clearly knows it was an excuse made to run away from the traumatic history.

However, his long built solid shell is once shaken again with the latest news of YunHo moving in with them in Busan in two weeks time which really suffocates him. To voice out his disagreement would only mean inviting the devil and stirring up unnecessary questions. As both men never had any conflicts ever since becoming stepbrothers even though there’s a secret well-inserted carefully beneath their past.

JaeJoong’s nervousness and uneasiness had brought him far away from the city and back to ChungNam. His only wish, to be able to calm himself upon meeting his biological mother, Siek Jin.

“Omma, aren’t you lonely being with Changmin in this neighbourhood?” JaeJoong came up with the question to break the ice. Both mother and son are enjoying the evening breeze in the garden with a cup of tea in hand.

“What is there to be lonesome about?” A small smile appeared on her face as she brings the cup slowly to her tender lips. Blowing the surface of the almost colorless yellow liquid while moving the cup carelessly in a circular motion. “I have friends around here and my flowers will keep me company. There’s still ChangMin and you. What more could I ask?” JaeJoong stared ahead, observing his mother’s tanned wrinkled face. Each one is a proof of every hardship she had been through. Even without a husband by her side, he believes his mother had remained composed and unruffled in continuing her journey until she reaches the end of her road.

“It’s been five months since ajusshi passed on to another realm.” He absentmindedly brought up the funereal topic. For a minute there, his mother kept quiet. Even the teacup that was half way brought to her lips stopped midway. The atmosphere thickens with unuttered words. Guilt pierced through JaeJoong’s conscience for triggering the recent event. His mother has held the term as a single mother for the second time.

“How’s your father? Do you reckon you’ll get a younger sibling soon?” Siek Jin tried making the event sound cheerful. JaeJoong’s eyes bulged out as he choked on his own saliva.

“That’ll be very awkward don’t you think so?” He answered with the remains of his coughs. His mother patted his back lightly and laughed. “However, I overheard appa’s conversation with umma Lee. He wanted a child but she doesn’t.” JaeJoong will always remember to address his step mom as ‘umma Lee’ in front of his mother but definitely not at home. He still calls her by Hyo-Lee. Numerous times had his father asked him to make the effort, he find it worse than the tongue twisters.

In a split second, his mind wanders off to Yunho. He chuckled to himself. The image of Yunho in his twenties with a small toddler beside him is hilarious. “Gosh, and you are taking this whole thing as a joke.” JaeJoong scratched his head.

“Well, I’m afraid the poor baby will look more like appa’s grandson.” His chuckle turns to thunderous laughter. Immediately, a hand swatted his head and he ignored it. Instead, he used his free hand to wipe away the tears that was brimming in his eyes.

“Let me guess, Jae hyung is back!” Changmin shouted from the front gate. “I can hear him five miles away!!” JaeJoong rolled his eyes.

“Nice one Minnie! You came home like two minutes ago and you started teasing me already?” JaeJoong pouted and shouted his reply. “We’re in the garden!” he yelled again. Changmin then appeared with his duffel bag, hanging on his left shoulder.

“Hey you little squirt! Come here!” Jae went over and did a head-locked to the younger boy.

“Let me go you big buffalo! Get off!” ChangMin’s hands struggles to push his brother’s arm and to pull away his head. JaeJoong continues to irritate the younger lad by ruffling his hair.

“Aww, man! It took me two hours and a bottle of hair gel to make that style.” JaeJoong could only smirk at his brother’s whines. He had once been through that stage.

ChangMin let out a sigh of defeat after the umpteenth attempt to revive his dead hair failed miserably.

“Come on, I’ll take your bag for you.” ChangMin smiled appreciatively. “But first, I think I’ll need a forklift.” JaeJoong and Siek Jin sniggered.

“Ha. Ha. Very funny guys.” Changmin walks off, remembering to smack his brother using his bag on purpose.

Over dinner, the three of them had light conversation.

“How’s school?” Jae asked as he wipes his mouth with a napkin.

“Fine I guess.” ChangMin answered, not looking up from his food. “Don’t worry; I’m still the top student in the school.”

“That’s good to hear.”  The dinner went on silently after that. ChangMin went to his room to finish up his schoolwork while JaeJoong helps cleaning up.

“Omma, I guess you made the right choice by sending ChangMin to boarding school. At least, he gets to come home every weekend.” Siek Jin continues washing the dishes.

“I’m happy he’s doing well. Anyway, where are you going with this JaeJoong?” The question caught him off guard. Shit. Busted.

There’s no point denying it then. He sighed, “Omma, what if, I’m just saying, what if… I stay here with you?” Finally, he gets it off his chest. The question he had in his mind since he arrived. Siek Jin considered her son’s request for a moment.

“Have you thought long enough?” she asked.

“So, it means you agree?”

“I did not agree nor disagree, but don’t you pity your appa?” JaeJoong kept quiet. His held a pain and somehow disappointed expression. “Omma doesn’t mind you staying but you won’t be successful staying in ChungNam as compared to Busan. Besides, you have your diploma, I’m sure you wouldn’t want to waste it. Appa never forbids you to meet me and that is why you are here every two weeks. No matter where you are, omma still loves you as much as omma loves ChangMin.”

“Omma seemed to dislike my presence in this house.” JaeJoong frets. The fact of seeing Yunho everyday if his request is turn down scares him. Siek Jin held JaeJoong’s hands and gave it a little squeeze.

“Appa and omma have only you. Omma and ajusshi have ChangMin. But, appa and Hyo-Lee have no one. Try considering your appa’s feelings. Omma doesn’t want him to feel lost when you moved here.”

“What about you, omma? Don’t you feel like you had lost something when I’m in Busan?” JaeJoong tried manipulating his mother’s feelings. He wants to know her standpoint. Siek Jin on the other hand was calm as she gazes upon her eldest son.

“Fifteen years. I was alone without you, JaeJoong. When ChangMin was born, I was more determined that we will meet again. Someday. One day. My hopes never waver. Thank God for six years later we met again. I had been through the pain of losing someone and I don’t want your appa to ever feel the pain for the second time.” Her voice cracked and the tears that were held back for years began pouring down.

She knows her ex-husband, Jin Ya regretted their separation. She knew that Jin Ya took JaeJoong away when he failed to talk himself into returning thus, disappearing himself to forget their memories together. Now, she doesn’t have the heart to hurt him by allowing JaeJoong to stay with her. She also knew that JaeJoong’s love for her will never fade just as hers although they live apart.
