(10/9 - New Layout + Sidebar Style/Order)
(Working on: Revising - Past Posts/Rules)
(^ Just my entries. Adjust wording + tone.)
(^ Not changing the rules, mostly tone.)
(^ No longer stressed out like at the start.)
This entry will serve as sort of an 'away-missions' headquarters (main entry), where you can find the rules, ask any questions you may have, (perhapes allow in the future suggestions for challenges/prompts), and try out the first challenge (sampler). Originally, I hadn't planned on posing any challenges/prompts for this community, but then I thought it could be fun, I have so many ideas for them, and Halloween is coming up. This 'away-missions' blog is still in the "test drive" phase. Depending on members and visitors' response to the new feature, I'll consider developing it. For example, coming up with more or a better tag system or method of organization for it. Also, post more and perhapes permitt suggestions + discussions for future challenges/prompts. The main goal of the latest feature is to have fun with the topics! (I tried my best to insure that the sampler is simple and flexible as possible due to it being the first one out of the 'shuttle bay' or off the 'transporter pad' so to speak.) Also, to the writers, fulfulling certain one or any of the topics is optional.

[Rules] Starfleet Regulation:
(APPLIES TO ALL CHALLENGES/PROMPTS)
- (See: General
rules for the community.)
- Formatt (Posts): Just like it specifies in the first rule entry - clear heading and (available) tags. (See:
tagging system requirements,
tags list, and
tag suggestion/discussion entry; Reminder: If there are certain tags that aren't on the list, please visit the third link. Also, go ahead and post your story then go back and edit/add it once they do exist.)
- Length: 100 words or more; drabbles/1-shots to longer if you choose.
- Unlimited: Amount of time to fullfill and how many times you use any of the challenges/prompts. Also, there's the option to use any of the ones I post that are available in no particular order and may combine two or more if you choose.
- Status: None. Not a contest. No winners. Just a fun free-for-all. On another note, you don't have to create a whole new story to satisfy the challenge/prompt. If you have an older/existing piece that fits the bill, feel free to submit that.
- Comments: Post any questions here and to future challenge/prompt entries. Also, after submitting your story to the community, please put a link to it in the comment section of that specific challenge/prompt entry that you're fulfilling. (I'm requiring this for I want to conserve tags and provide an easy way for members/readers to find those stories because of that.) One more thing: please provide a title in the subject line that specifies your comment as a 'question' or 'fic' (or 'fic: title of story').

[Challenge] Away-Mission (1/Sampler):
FILE: HALLOWEEN (AND/OR) HORROR
- Topic(s): The holiday (history, celebration, and so on) and/or horror (the literary or film/television genre).
- Options: Whatever you want. Could do a character study, non-dark/serious piece, mix genres (as long as the topic is the 'centerpiece'), remixed version of a film or episode of a tv show (AU/not), romance/any pairing(s), focus on away-missions, explore fears or personal demons, do a crossover, contemporary (futuristic) twists on (classic) horror fiction (by famous writers such as Edgar Allan Poe + Stephen King), somehow apply/get inspired by works of art (of the dark/death/horror persuasion that could be used as artifacts, weapons, technology, etc.), and the list goes on. Also, it's possible to use urban legends/mythology/legends/folklore/ghost stories or explore/comment on specific aspects of horror (psychology, sociology, critics, character types, terms, conventions, approaches, depiction - race/gender/sexuality, fanbase, historical context/background, country/source, narrative/themes/plots, other/more).
- Resource(s): In case you're interested and might find these (film) genre studies of horror useful, check out these books:
"The Horror Film" (Hutchings, 2004) and
"Horror Film Reader" (Silver/Ursini, 2000). (Plus, the genre browser/section at
IMDB for titles/examples that were made in various countries. Visit YouTube/video sites for trailers, clips, interviews, and so forth.)
