[ Her eyes narrow just faintly. But then she smiles. ]

Rook is a funny little thing, isn't he.

[ She frowns a little, sullenly. ]

He makes Pet so so angry.

[whitehollows]

That is because he's unkind, Feather. And he cares for no one but Poet.

But Pet is wonderful and you're wonderful too. And Key. He says I'm a monster but I'm not. He's the monster, isn't he, Lady?

[whitehollows]

Yes. Yes he is.

[ Leaning to take Feather's face in her hands, smiling with gleaming white teeth. ]

You're no monster. You're a pretty little lady, aren't you?

[grayspaces]

[ She preens at the attention, her face unable to flush but her lashes fluttering in satisfaction. ]

Pet says I'm his Snow White, that I'm a princess. Lady, you're the queen.

[whitehollows]

[ It's easy, to encourage the fantasy. ]

If I am queen, then Pet and Feather are my favorites at court. I will give you both presents. Would you like that?

[ She nods, eager and attentive. ]

[ Tenderly smoothing Feather's hair. ]
