Fireworks Finale: John Mauceri and Friends

My favorite conductor has retired from being the Director of the Hollywood Bowl. This past weekend was his final performances as such, and it was a blast. I'll miss him as he was one of my favorite memories while going to the Bowl with my family.

He always has these funny anecdotes that draws in the audience, and it brought a chuckle out of my husband. He described his memories coming from New York to LA, and the various things that they discovered.

E. Bernstein Fanfare for John at the Bowl
Elfman The Overeager Overture (world premiere)

Oh wow, Danny Elfman was there, for the premiere. It was awesome! My husband and I were speculating on whether or not he was going to present, since it was the first performance of his work. We were cheering on the inside when he saw him come on stage. He had his Vans on to go with the suit. How appropriate!

Debussy Prelude to the Afternoon of the Faun Member of the Joffrey Ballet
Wagner Ride of the Valkyries, from Die Walkure Ho-Jo-ToHo! sung by Miss Piggy
Korngold arr. Mauceri Between Two Worlds - Concert Overture (American premiere)
BennettTroubadour Music(world premiere)
Intermission
Guettel The Princess Bride (world premiere)

This particular work was absolutely amazing. It's a glimpse of a future muscial, and I now have a craving to see this show when it opens in New York.

Bernstein/Wilbur Glitter and Be Gay, from Candide sung by Ms. Chenoweth
Warren/Gordon You'll Never Know sung by Ms. Chenoweth

The singer in question, was a joy to watch. Her versatility in singing amazed me, and the way she brought the lyrics out for the audience brought a grin to my face. I hope to see her some of future performances.

Cooley/Davenport Fever sung by Miss Piggy
Gershwin Watch Your Step! Finale from Shall We Dance
Raposo (It's Not Easy) Bein' Green sung by Kermit the Frog
David/Rose Tonight You Belong to Me sung by Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy
Gershwin arr. Healey Strike up the Band (with fireworks)

What is the Hollywood Bowl without fireworks? For me, the orchestration of fireworks and music together brings a smile to my face, and always allows me to build more memories of the Bowl.

Thank you, John Mauceri. You will be missed.
