This is not a current S. P. O but a memory of one that occured approximately three to four years ago and an update. I was watching the television show 'Animal Cops: Houston' when this memory came about. I have no idea what exactly brought it up but here is the memory.
Three or four years ago, when my dog was still alive, I took her out walking in the morning, as I usually did. And, as I usually did, I made my rounds greeting every animal I came across, as well as my neighbors. The neighbors had given me their permission for me to come and pet their dogs-some while the dogs were in their yards-just to give them some loving company while their owners were away for a little while. But back on topic. I also would greet the horses, cattle, goats, cats, etc. Anyway, upon making my rounds, there was one rude and stubborn neighbor who was clearly not taking, and refusing to take, care of his three horses, two bulls, three dogs, two cats and 20+ chickens and one rooster. I and several other neighbors had been offering to help him because he was overwhelmed. Our offers were refused and any advice given fell on deaf ears. On one fateful day, Chelsey (my dog) and I stopped to greet the animals. The two bulls were in a pen that was much too small to hold even just one of them and their water was non-existant. I usually filled their water trough but that day I didn't because I had enough. The three horses were walking skeletons and now, one of them had an emergency: One of the horse's eyes was missing. The dogs, as usual, were playing out in the street without any supervision and no leashes. The owner came out and demanded to know what I was doing. I told him I was admiring his horses and explained that one horse had a missing eye. His response shocked me. His response was, ''So?!'' So then I asked if he was taking the horse to the vet. His response: ''Why would I take a stupid animal to a vet for something that's going to heal on its own?! Get the h*** off of my property!'' But I wasn't anywhere on his property. Chelsey and I were on the side of the street, since our area had no sidewalks. So I bade him good day and left.
Once I got home I called Animal Control and the Livestock Officer, gave them the situation and told them what was going on and gave them the address and house number to where the ongoing situation was.
The next day, both the Animal Control Officer(s) and the Livestock Division Officer(s) came and removed ALL of the said animals. I felt, and still feel, relieved that I helped get the animals out of that situation. The officers then told me that I did a wonderful thing and said that they had been having problems with this Stupid Pet Owner for quite some time now and were just glad that we finally did something about it.
Update: Then, about a year ago, I heard that the animals were adopted out to wonderful, loving new homes and that the owner is now facing several felony charges of animal cruelty, neglect, and abuse. He is now serving a long, long time in prison for his actions.
Again, I don't know what brought this up and I do not know if I should put this behind a cut or not, since it is so long.
Sincerely,
Rebecca M.
