Exotic Pets

I am extremely, extremely dubious of people keeping as pets undomesticated animals. I know that there are intelligent, responsible people out there. I know that I shouldn't let shock stories about the kid who released his Burmese python into "the wild" in his back yard influence too heavily my opinion of snake keepers. Chinchillas are not undomesticated exotics. They are only considered exotics as far as veterinary care is concerned. They are technically livestock according to USDA.

Less worried about the chinchilla per se (although it was on the exotic site) than on the, "I bought this pet for my kid and she didn't want to take care of it, it's too much work for me, but she's actually really low maintenance!"

I mean, you don't buy pets for your kids unless you're willing to take care of said pet if kid falls down on the job, sheesh.
