Met a really nice lady today while walking Dusya.
Her dog, a 6-year-old mutt, is handicapped--he has a bend in his lower back causing him to walk crookedly, like a crab. I asked her why, was he born like that? She said that before she got him, his owners (in Italy) had two twins who used the poor puppy as a toy: throwing him around, hitting him, and other methods of ToddlerTorture to a sweet defenseless puppy. She said that she came to those people's house and they told her he lived in the backyard. "But I always came through the backyard," she says, "and I never saw a dog there." It appears he was absolutely tiny, and living in some obscure corner of the yard on two bricks and a piece of cloth. She took the puppy and he started kissing her face with joy. She asked the lady if she could take him: "Sure, I was going to kill him anyway," says the owner.
It was so heartbreaking and depressing and I was really happy for Pluto (the dog) that she got him! She told me about when she took him to the vet as about three years old, he said "Oh, with this problem he probably won't live for more than 4 or 5 years." Later on, he said probably no more than 7 years. Now he says "wow, he's looking so good I'm hoping he might just live to a normal age!" It was so touching and I'm so glad for the little guy!
