Update: Yorkie attacked by 2 bull mastiffs at dog park

Well, My mom finally got her computer fixed and was able to send me some info on the situation.

My dog was attacked this past Sunday afternoon.  I am including the information regarding Teddy and the occurrence that has placed him in the hospital. I would greatly appreciate any help you could offer in posting this information at different websites. Thank you so much in advance for everything!

All the best…..Kerin Messner

My Yorkshire Terrier, Teddy, is just about 2 years old and on July 10, 2006, we were playing in a dog area on the beach and he was attacked by two bull mastiffs.  Teddy suffered extensive life threatening injuries.  He is currently fighting for his life in the intensive care unit of the animal hospital.  Teddy suffered a punctured chest cavity, broken ribs, and fluid is building in his lungs and chest cavity and underneath his heart.  In addition, his white blood cell count is very low, making it very difficult for his body to fight off infection.  Due to the liquid in his lungs, he has formed an infection/pneumonia. Teddy's respiratory level is quite high as he struggles to keep breathing through the pain.  While Teddy did undergo initial surgery immediately following the accident, additional surgery to remove the fluid in the chest is not an option because of Teddy's weakened condition.  The doctors keep telling us not to give up hope though.  They believe that he can come through this.  I would love to be able to go after the owner of the two bull mastiffs that did this to Teddy but he took off with his dogs and did not even bother to see if Teddy was ok.  Teddy is more than just a dog to me. He is a member of our family and loved so much, which I am sure many of you can understand.  I would do anything to help Teddy.  The medical bills right now are at a little over $6000 and expected to continue to rise.  If anyone could see it in their hearts to either say prayers or contribute funds, we would greatly appreciate it.  I will continue to keep everyone updated on his condition.  Thank you for taking the time to read about my little baby.

She was also sent an update on Teddy's condition. From how it sounds, he's doing much better, but he's not out of the woods yet.

Teddy has had a busy week to say the least.  Teddy was examined by the vet and they determined that the feeding tube may have been irritating his stomach which in turn may have caused him to vomit stomach bile. They couldn't pull the tube because he still was not eating on his own.  The doctor did not seem overly concerned and stressed that this type of irritation was common with feeding tubes and that is why doctors usually hesitate inserting them into pets.  He told me to watch for excessive vomiting and to try to work to get Ted to eat on his own.  The vomiting stopped but then when I came home from work earlier this week, Teddy in very good spirits and I turned my back for no more than 5 minutes and when I turned around he had pulled his feeding tube out of his neck. I think he must of scratched at it and it came lose and then he was able to turn his head and grab it with his mouth and pull it out.  I could not believe it!  So needless to say,  we had to go to the vet again. It was good that we went because they found out that one of Teddy's larger wounds had become very infected underneath the stitches and they were concerned the infection would go straight to his heart. The doctor told me there was no time to waste with trying to treat it with antibiotics. So they had to operate and cut the infection out. The doctor feels very confident that he got all of the infection out and the wound now looks so much better than it did before.  Ted is now home again and in great spirits once again. He is eating on his own so the doctors did not replace the feeding tube (thankfully).  Ted will need to go back in ten days for a check up and to have the stitches removed.

All the best.....Kerin
