Repeating pretty much everyone in the post on this in baristas: If we call you "ma'am," we're either being polite or you're straight up being a cunt and we're trying not to kill you.

Like the different tones in "Have a nice day!" Cashiers and nice people can hear the difference. People with sticks up their asses don't even hear the words.

There have to be some places where it's encouraged if not required for baristas to address customers like this, I would think. I know other customer service related jobs certainly do.
