Is being black an excuse for terrible grammar? They do it on purpose. I mean, i to sound racist; that's not what i mean. I'm not against slang, by any means. Which particular words, phrases, even pronunciations on chooses to use is an expression of who they are. It makes a statement about their ure and/or subculture. However, I don't consider it an excuse for speaking bad English. I think there is a big difference between this and slang. For instance, I've heard people use terms such as "do be" in place of "are." ("They do be purple!") I am a bitch and a snob and correct people's grammar when they speak like an sometimes. But I always hold my tongue for things like this, because I know the person must be aware of what word they really mean, and I'm afraid they'd say that my correction was race-related, because ebonics-speaking people (actually of varrying complexions) are the ones that talk like this. What does everybody think? If I wanted to be even more of an , I'd say I'm completely against Ebonics in the first place, but I'm trying to be open-minded.
