I'm just reminded of when I was doing my piercing apprenticeship and every weekday lunch, we'd get ultra-boring-looking civil servants coming in for work on their tattoos, or the occasional piercing.

Later on I worked as one of said civil servants, and I'd run into people at work who I know have some interesting mods under that suit. And on the inside, I'd lol.

There's also an unfortunate attitude to consider any sort of dissent or criticism within the community as OMGBETRAYAL!! because body modification is about opression and an Us vs. Them mentality, so everyone must be unquestioningly supportive.
Replace "body modification" with "being fat" and you have fatshionista!
