That might have been what the OP was trying to get to. This: just having darker skin and African ancestry doesn't tie Barak in with a lot of the elements of the larger culture or the influences that many black Americans have so deeply ingrained in their familial history and which influence their outlook and point of view in the world. His upbringing and his cultural background are different from a lot of elements that are taken to be the "common" experience of a black American...

That interview was one of Colbert's finest moments, IMHO. He managed to convey his WTF-ness at what she was saying without breaking character. It was awesome.

Yeah, my response to that interview was along the lines of "if you're having to classify someone's experience of being black along that specific of lines...you've got too much time on your hands, cuz I can guarantee you, the southern redneck racists in my family aren't going to get beyond 'he looks black' to search for pedigree before determining how to treat anyone'."
