Maybe putting the dog to sleep is the only option, but some people don't seem to understand how incredibly hard it is to do it... I can't blame the girl for postponing it. :/
Oh I agree, I know what you mean... the dog should not suffer just so the owner won't have to deal with it. It's just that I put myself in her shoes, and I know I would have to be bitchslapped into making the right decision... I would be in all possible levels of denial. It's an awful situation. I would need someone supportive to help me do the right thing. Being attacked by random internet bullies wouldn't help at all.
I had to make that decision this past January with my dog. She was 17 years old and going downhill fast. She wasn't going to get better, but get a whole lot worse.
I've done it twice in the past two years. Even though I knew it had to be done, it still broke my heart and I'm still missing my beloved companions quite fiercely.
mr_murphy_dog was rescued from the pound. I found him online by accident, something inside me snapped and we cleaned out the checking account two days before payday to fetch him out of doggie jail. Six months later, he started having seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy. Three months and $5K later, he succumbed to a status epilepticus and we had to have him put down. He was probably about 3 years old. I still miss him terribly. I love my new dog...but Whiskey Jack is no Murphy

Seconded. I had to put my 17 year old to sleep last year. IT was the hardest thing I've ever had to do (and I still cry when I think about it... hell, I'm crying now) and I honestly put it off longer than I should have... but I'd had this cat since I was 10... it's so hard to let go of something like that. This was more than just a stupid pet, this was the only bond I had left with my dad, who died when I was 15.
This was MY cat, and he was the best damn cat that ever lived. The "right" thing to do is often very hard, and it's very difficult to try and go through. It's easy to be all judgmental when it's NOT YOUR PET.
If one of my cats had to have a $7k surgery to survive? I'm sorry, but I just don't have it. It wouldn't be possible to get it. We have trouble coming up with $300 for an overdue power bill... 7k just isn't happening. We could sell everything we own, and STILL not have enough... and then we'd have no car to get to work with.
Oh god, when they're that old they've just been a huge part of your life? When my sixteen year old kitty died a few years ago, it just about broke me. We had totally grown up together.
I am sorry about your kitty, but he sounds like he was very, very loved. (Your pooch too.)
We weren't saying that if she had exhausted every option that it wouldn't be more humane to not euthanize the dog, however, she hadn't even asked if she could finance the bill yet!

Yes, I think misunderstandings are bound to happen with such a delicate and painful subject.

I'm so sorry for your loss... I'm sorry if this sounds lame, but at least she's not in pain anymore.
