Our other dog (that we actually went out and planned to adopt) was dropped off at the shelter door in labor. I was happy that at least in her case they left her somewhere that she'd be taken care of but still shocked that because they chose to not have her spayed she became too much of a problem and they dumped her. She has some real separation anxiety issues now:(
Before we moved the neighbors in back had moved and left their cat. He started hanging around us because I'd put food out but he'd never get close to me. He came over one day with a large gash on his neck. I never could get within 10 feet of him after that. He'd scream in pain from it and I felt so terrible. Of course, when we contacted animal control they told us that if we wanted him picked up we would have to catch him ourselves and then call them, they'd then come out and pick him up. I'd explain that I didn't know this cats personality but I knew he didn't like people very well and I was scared to try and trap an injured animal but they still wouldn't help.
It was awful, neighbors of course thought he was ours and it went on for more than two weeks. We finally contacted the mayors office and even threatened to contact the local newspapers about how animal control was responding. They finally picked him up without any notice and even though I knew it was probably for the best I cried for days because I knew they'd put him down and it was heartbreaking.
That’s awful. When we were growing up and living in far off places, we found a dog that had an ulcer on its leg. My Mum took it to get treated and Squiggles moved in (her tail was docked and when she wanted to wag, she squiggled). She moved in. The family who did own her weren’t happy, but my Mum gave them a right earful.
Living abroad we discovered a lot of ex-pats abandoned animals they kept as pets when they left. I’ll never forget a dog so thin that it actually staggered down the road. My Mum gave it some food, which it couldn’t keep down before wandering off. We prayed that it would get knocked down by a car.

I really hope you get to keep the cats.
