And once again, the Super Bowl seduces me.

Feb 03, 2008 21:20

I don't even care about football, but inevitably, every year I end up watching the Super Bowl, at least up to the half-time show.

Of course, if I hadn't fallen prey to the television's temptations, I wouldn't have seen something very exciting.

Aside from the FedEx commercial, which was a work of genius and made me giggle, there was a trailer for the new Iron Man movie.

Now, I hadn't heard anything about Iron Man until I saw that trailer, so once I got back to the hidey-hole, I promptly headed over to IMDB to look.

And then I saw this other trailer.

...okay. Now that I've recovered, a few thoughts:

1)Robert Downey Jr. is playing the Iron Man. I think this bears repeating: Robert. Downey. Junior. Playing Iron Man. That's...that's pretty special.

And Terrence Howard. Okay, I didn't see your movie, but whoever directed Hustle and Flow? Thank you for discovering him.

2)I suppose I should actually read the comics now, shouldn't I. Or at least look at the Wiki. Then again, no superhero movie thus far has made me into an actual fan (as in, participant in a comics fandom), so I don't know what I'm worried about.

3)I'll just confess, right here right now. I am an American and a regular partaker of American popular media. As such, I am probably so desensitized to less-than-graphic violence that it has become fetishistic and unreal to me. With that disclaimer firmly in place, I feel I can now make this statement in its proper context: That beatdown in the trailer, set in time to the opening guitar chords of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man", gives me little chills every time I see it. Awesome.

4)Robert Downey Jr. I just think I should say it again.

Ahem. I'm done.

We've started reading Much Ado About Nothing for Lit Crit, which I haven't read since sometime in high school. Benedick and Beatrice remain the only characters I actually like in this play, although, to be fair, they are the best-characterized, so that was probably Shakespeare's point. I dislike Claudio as much now as I did back then - not even Robert Sean Leonard can make me like Claudio, guys, and that's saying a lot.

I am, however, still looking forward to our class viewing of the Kenneth Branaugh film version, both because it gives me the opportunity to talk about Keanu Reeves and Shakespeare in the same sentence and because Kenneth himself is ever so pretty a very good Benedick.

I have, however, recently discovered that Sir Derek Jacobi has played Benedick on stage. I hope there's a performance on tape somewhere, because Doctor Who has gone and made me all curious about Derek Jacobi and I think that'd be a wonderful way to get acquainted with him.

Speaking of Who, I made about 200 words of progress on my Spearhead meta today, and will hopefully get a bit more done before bed. Progress on the bicycle ficlet series has been stalled, as I'm really not sure how in-character it would be for Two to appropriate a bike in order to make a speedy getaway (assuming the TARDIS was nowhere nearby).

And I just realized that I have ten days to write my
geekfictionSmutathon entry and I still have no idea which characters I'm even going to use. Profanities.

Also, I've started jotting down notes for a Pirates of the Caribbean drinking game. The completed rules should be up here soon. Friends at school, I propose that we track down copies of all three Pirates movies and make a weekend of it.
