The telephone database

I have been against the war in Iraq since its commencement, failing to see a correlation between the Iraqian government and the terrorist attack that occurred on September 11, 2001. I have totally been opposed to the Patriot Act which was claimed to be neccessary to combat the evil terrorists as they continue to plot death and destruction over the United States.
I have long commented on the ease it would be to enact a "hitlertarian" regime in todays political, economic, and socialogical climate.
Now it is revealed that a database of telephone conversations have been compiled by the NSA in further defense of our interests. After a dismal failure to compile computer trackings by initiating a chip installed on the computer CPU that would track and compile data from everything that was done on the computer, the government resorts to a telephone database, with its supporters turning the table from the issue being an invasion of the average citizens privacy to an issue of "why do you not support this, what do you have to hide" mentality.
I fear the government I have loyally and blindly served for my entire life. These measures to support people's freedom I do not support, and I strongly oppose these attempts to restrict the freedoms we have enjoyed for centuries.
I see an extremely shrinking gap between the totalitarian regimes and our government of today.
