Video Games Live 2008

I was worried that I spent $68 for an experienced I already enjoyed last year. There's red tape that the organizers of the show have to deal with to play music owned by a variety of companies, so I expected to hear the same music as last year. When I heard that they would be playing the music from Mass Effect for the first time I thought I'd get at least one new piece of music. Knowing that people aren't willing to settle for the same piece of pie they've already paid for, the organizers mixed it up a lot. Jason believes that about 50% of the show was material we haven't heard before and I agree with him.

The new pieces included the music from Metroid, Outrun, Castlevania and more. They kept all the best pieces that everyone wanted to hear, such as the theme from Halo, Sonic, Mario Bros and more. I was ready to say that the show was weaker than last year's because they didn't play One Winged Angel but I guess the organizers know me too well, it was the encore piece before they played the music from Castlevania. There were some repeated sections, they reused the segments where individuals played Space Invaders and Frogger on stage.

Overall the night was a success. I had a great dinner with Judy, Sherman, James, Jason, Kevin and Andrew. After the show I went to the Starlite room with Jason, Kris and Jon, met up with some of Kris's friends, drank enough and ended up dancing. Pretty good start to the week long holiday.

Note to self: Let Jon and Kris grab $25 floor seats for me next year.
