In a lot of ways, local elections annoy me even more than national ones. Local politicians are in a position to take specific positions on local issues that directly affect the voters, yet they seem even more likely than national candidates to say nothing but a bunch of meaningless, generic bullshit. For example, in the Gainesville City commissioner election I get to choose between a candidate who "will continue to show that we are serious about investing in people by ... strengthening recreation programs for youth in our public parks" and another one who will "Promote responsible growth and redevelopment in our community."
It's like all local politics is about is telling your voters (in vague terms) about how local government is going to take care of them. Even worse, I actually had to do some work and look these idiots up, and all they can do is spout this drivel? Normally when this happens I would just vote against the incumbent, least he think he'd received a mandate to keep doing the crappy job he'd done in the past, but there's no incumbent here. I would be leaning towards the guy who said he wants to "reduce taxes," but then right after that he says he wants to "Build a sustainable Gainesville" and "Improve the transportation infrastructure around the city." I guess he doesn't believe government spending needs to match or fall below government revenue... of course, he has a lot of company there.
I would really like to see a local politician for once who pledges to do almost nothing, and to prevent local government as a whole from doing anything to the best of his ability.
