Stupidity abounds

My download speeds have been horrible for the past couple weeks. So I finally get around to calling Cox and complaining. First the idiot on the other end tells me it's probably spyware. It isn't. My computers don't even know what spyware is. Then he says my networking equipment is probably congesting the speed. My brand new $150 gigabit router, gigabit switch, and CAT5e cable are not the fucking problem. But I jump through all the hoops the moron asks me to so I can just get him to send someone out here and fix whatever the problem is.

He has me run a speed test, and says something about KB per second. I ask, "Do you mean kilobits per second or kilobytes per second?" His response was: "Kilobits, kilobytes, tomato, toe-mah-toe, it's all the same, it's all KB." I wanted to yell at him and tell him what a complete failure at life he was and otherwise vent my frustration that he was wasting my god damn time with his incompetence when I just wanted my problem fixed. But instead I said "I see." I got a technician sent out for Friday morning. We'll see how incompetent he is. Meanwhile, i'm downloading at 80 kilobits per second, and it's making me sad.

For those who don't know, there are 8 bits in a byte, so this "technician's" statement that there are no difference between the two is so horribly wrong I was furious that he was allowed to have his job. I'm also in a pretty bad mood because my connection speed is supposed to be 4,000 kbps, not 80.

Also, do people really pronounce tomato "toe-mah-toe?" Because that's a really obnoxious way to pronounce the word. I've never met anyone who did, and I would be almost as reluctant to associate with them as I would with a "technology expert" who thought bits and bytes were the same thing. Almost.
