x3: the last stand

alright. so, i saw x3 at the midnight showing tonight. we got tickets online and by the time we got to the theater, it was packed. kind of to be expected. not expected was how many people snuck in from adjoining theaters. there were a bunch of us with tickets for that showing that didn't have a seat. so the theater manager took the group of us standing around out to the main hall. in order to please us, they took us to another theater and pretty much gave us a private showing of the print version of the film they had. i think that's what he called it anyways. point is, we got a slightly different presentation of the film from everyone else. and there were all of maybe 25 people in our theater. haha, sweet.

as for the movie itself, what i have to say about it is under the cut, just in case you don't want to know anything about it. and remember, i'm familiar with the comics and both of the t.v. series. i'm a nerd and far more picky than any of you. also, it's long as hell. i like to talk, ok? haha. so, if you want to wait til you see it yourself,

ok, i'm always nervous about things like this. there's such potential to screw shit up major. but my apprehensions about the first two were unfounded, so i was all excited. i mean, they were introducing new mutants, tackling the dark phoenix story, bringing in the whole cure thing... what was not to love? unexpected deviations from the truth, that's what!

for starters, let's take the fact that they attribute "phoenix" to a split personality jean's always had. ...uh, what? they say that jean was far too powerful to ever be able to safely control her powers, so professor x had to put in layers of psychic safeguards around her brain to keep her from harming herself and others. this supposedly caused her split personality, "phoenix", to form. ...excuse me? phoenix was a crazy powerful alien life form! not some stupid other side of jean fucking grey. good god.

the only good thing that really came out of having phoenix in this movie for me, was that she killed that annoying fuck of a tool cyclops. i have never liked his ass. ever. sadly, i didn't get to watch him die. it's only implied. i'll settle for the knowledge that his sorry ass is gone for good.

i do however have a big ass problem with her killing the professor. no professor x? are you people on crack? what the hell is that nonsense? -sigh- but back to the review before i get twitchy again.

there's a cure for mutations presented in the movie. it later gets used like bullets, as weapons against the mutants who oppose said cure. it changes them into proper humans almost instantly. ok, so you expect a few mutants are going to bite it. fine. but mystique? oh come the fuck on! i get how it was important to the plot line, blah, blah, blah, but fuck you. as raven darkholme, you could care less about her.

much later, the same stupid fate befalls magneto. i can barely talk about it. the only reason they pulled that shit was to have a nice tidey, wrap it all up ending. fuck you brett ratner. even if you did add that slightest bit of tease at the very end. you screwed things up enough with this one.

the worst, by far for me is what became of rougue. those who know me know that my xmen obsession begins with wolverine and ends with gambit. gambit, after having been promised to make an appearance in part two, never showed. then he was supposed to have a bigger role in this one. guess what? no fucking gambit. still, i knew that was going to happen. and i'd thought, fine, maybe somewhere down the line, in a later movie.

you see, the reason gambit is so important, other than he's a cajun badass who's hot as hell, is his relationship with rogue. there's a chemistry there that cannot be replaced when you try to have rogue be all romantic with freaking ice man. they're not even supposed to be close to the same age! -deep breath- ANYWAY. the gambit/rogue love epic, is just that. epic. there's so much to their story and it's all so rad. soooo much of it is centered on her mutant power and how to love anyway, even if you can't ever touch your partner. and they do love, they find a way.

yes, well, that's how it WOULD be if this movie wasn't so retarded. they actually have rogue go to get the cure. they leave you hanging for awhile, wondering if she did it or not, but at the very end you find out she did. seriously, WHAT THE FUCK? ugh, i was ready to kill someone at that point.

alright, i know i've made it sound like it sucked ass. and in some ways, ho boy, it did. but i didn't hate it.

as eye candy goes, hey, you could certainly spend your money on worse. if you don't have many expectations, you'll likely have a pretty good time. and if you could give a fuck about sticking to storylines, then hey, definitely money well spent.

the introduction of beast was most welcomed. and kelsey grammar did him justice. his mild mannered hank was just, yeah, spot on. and beast in combat? can i get a hell yeah? cause he deserves one. aweseome stuff there.

i will say that the unexplained absence of nightcrawler was tangible. to me at least. maybe they can only have one blue male mutant per movie?

oh, this was so rad. i almost peed my pants when i saw a sentinel. yeah, a freaking sentinel. my mind was all, no way, they did it, they made a sentinel!!! ... it was a simulation in the combat room. bummer. ... but still, they showed us an effing sentinel!!! ahaha, that's awesome.

there's a few quite humorous moments in there. i'm not sure they'd be as humorous if you aren't an x men nerd like i am, but i liked them. there's a lovely cameo appearance by the god himself, stan lee, right at the beginning. i have a feeling i was the only one in our little group of 25 who even recognized the man. i sort of squeeled and pointed to the screen. but no one else did. oh well.

it was an enjoyable time. i need to see it again to pick up the finer points and details i missed this go round. i'm dying to see exactly which mutants were in this, particularly the small roles. it's just a thing. i have to know that kind of stuff.

all in all, good movie. i don't think it lives up to the first two. it certainly doesn't live up to the comics, not that it ever could.
