[Fic] A Future Looking for a Past

Jun 15, 2010 17:37

Welp, so long as I've got a works journal lying around I might as well use it.

Title: A Future Looking for a Past
Rating: G
Warnings: Nada
Word count: 448
Summary: Bruno introspects.
Notes: Written while stuck in an airport with nothing better to do. Apparently it turned out surprisingly okay? The original idea was inspired by a fanart on Pixiv, but damn if I can remember which one. Fun fact: this was the first fic I ever formally published online.
Written: March 2010

This is the happiest he's ever been.

Bruno's not sure how he knows this. After all, he doesn't even have any memories from before a few months ago, so how would he know if he was happy or not? But somehow he's sure of it. Living here with Yuusei and Jack and Crow, working on their D-wheels with them, meeting their friends, becoming a part of their circle and helping them all to move forward toward their dreams -- it's all so amazing, and Bruno can hardly imagine what his life would have been like if he hadn't met them. Even when Jack gets mad at him or Crow gets annoyed at him or the prototype engine explodes again, he doesn't mind, because it's all a part of what being one of them is about. It makes his heart feel warm in a way that he somehow knows it never has before.

But he tries not to think about that too hard. If this is so much happier than whatever came before, then what kind of life did he have before? What kind of person was he? What did he leave behind? Was there some kind of terrible tragedy in his past? Was he some kind of prisoner or criminal? Was he trying to run away from something? From someone?

Why wasn't there any record of him having ever existed?

Every now and again he thinks he should just give up on finding out. If there really is something bad in his past, then he might be bringing trouble right to the doorstep of all his new friends. That's the last thing in the world that he wants.

But then he thinks about what Yuusei would say, or Jack, or Crow. They would tell him not to worry about it, that finding out the truth about his past is more important than worrying about what trouble might or might not come up because of it. (Although Jack would probably punch him if any did.) Because it's his dream, and they'd tell him not to let anything keep him from reaching for it.

And it really is his dream. He really loves the way things are right now, but he doesn't want to spend the rest of his life not knowing what happened. There might be something important he has to do. There might be someone waiting for him to come back. So no matter how long it takes or how many dead ends he comes to, he'll keep looking.

And he'll never forget his new friends or how happy his new life has made him. No matter what he remembers about his past, he'll never forget this.

Right?
