[ History ] :
Very little is actually known about Derek’s past, and we don’t actually really get fully into it until Prolfiler, Profiled. He was born and raised in Chicago to a black father and a white mother. Though we never learn the father name his mother’s name is Fran. Derek has two sisters: Desiree and Sara Morgan. He goes back up to Chicago every year for his mother’s birthday.
At the age of ten Derek was witness to his father, who was a cop, being killed during a bust. A year or so after that he started hanging around older boys in a gang. After a fight with members from a rival gang a street cop, Stan Gordinski, arrested Derek and basically had it out for him ever since and picked him up for anything bad that went down in the neighborhood even if he had nothing to do with it.
Around age fifteen Carl Buford, who ran the Upward Youth Center, “Took Derek under his wing and became a surrogate father.” As said by his mother. He taught Derek football and made it possible for him to get a full ride scholarship to college as the star quarterback by teaching him football and helping get his juvenile record expunged. He blew his knee out in his sophomore year and ended his football career. He graduated with two degrees in law.
Also at around fifteen or so he found the body of a young boy around his age dead in an alleyway. No one identified him so he went around the neighborhood and started a collection to help bury the boy and give him a tombstone. He stops by the grave every time that he’s in town.
During his time in high school, while he under Buford’s mentorship, he was being sexually abused by Buford and was made to think that if he tried to tell anyone to stop it he would lose everything he had to be able to get out of the streets and make a better like for him and his family. He regrets to this day that he never said anything but finally confronts him in ‘Profiler, Profiled’ and makes him confess unknowingly to the police where he gets arrested.
He has a background in the ATF and is the bomb expert on the team.
He not religious because of his childhood experience but still prays and will go as far as to visit a church.
[ Personality ] :
In short Derek is a total alpha male, a ladies man, a true man’s man. He knows all the right moves, and all the right things to say. He’s assertive in his behavior and can have a cocky attitude. During cases he’s usually the one breaking in the door, being the first one in and just being the general muscle. He risks his neck on numerous occasions to chase the unsub down, and puts himself in the line of fire or danger in general to protect his teammates. He knows they can protect themselves but his sense of protectiveness over them makes him do it. He cares deeply for them and doesn’t want to see them hurt.
He flirts playfully with their technical analyst Penelope Garcia and after accidentally calling her ‘Baby Girl’ to get her attention when she first started he’s done it ever since. Their playful banter on the phone usually earns him weird looks from onlookers at some of the things that are said.
When the team goes out to the clubs to relax after a case or by himself, you will find him on the dance floor with at least two or three girls surrounding him while dancing. As said before he is a total ladies man, he is known to never be seen with the same woman twice, as their jobs are erratic and stressful for anything more than that. He can charm a lady without blinking it seems. Though as much as a ladies man as he is, he is a gentleman to boot.
He is confident in his job and with woman and will usually tease Spencer playfully about getting a girl and try to help him.
Because of his past, when they have cases with kids involved he’s usually a lot more brash and harder on the suspects during the case and when they finally catch them due to his own experiences; particularly if they are child molesters.
He cares about family and always makes sure that his mom and sisters are doing all right. And either canon, or head-canon, he has probably sent them money on numerous occasions when needed.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
[Strengths]
He is strong physically also good for picking up chicks let me tell ya and when he wants to has an intimidating aurora around him that make people nervous.
He’s a criminal profiler, so he can easily read people, specializing in obsessive compulsive cases. So don’t try to lie to him he will take your ass down, literally.
Fiercely loyal he will do everything to protect his friends and family
He’s good at charming people and making people trust him
[Weaknesses]
He will forgo his own safety to make sure others don’t get hurt
He will feel guilty for someone getting hurt on a case even if he couldn’t have helped prevent it.
He’s very confident in himself and cocky to a point he’s can almost be considered arrogant.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Do NOT bring up Carl Buford.
He teaches the self defense classes at the FBI.
He knows judo, and is thusly good at hand to hand as well as handling a gun.

[He has his gun out pointed at the unsub, who in turn has his newest victim under
gun point as well. He hasn’t called for back up like he should’ve but he was not taking the chance of a few seconds to call when the hostage was in there.]
It’s over Martin, put the gun down and let her go, she hasn’t done anything to you.
[He listens as the man struggles with himself saying the woman needs to be taught a lesson for hurting him like she did, cheating on him with another man. He grips his gun harder when the woman screams when the gun is placed under her chin.]
Ok you’re right Martin; she shouldn’t have done that to you. Come on man you don’t need to hurt her, put the gun down and we’ll talk about thi- Martin don’t you do it!
[Martin cocked the gun and goes on about everything he’s done for the woman and how she should pay for how she treated him. He barely saw the unsubs finger twitch before he had his gun holstered and was across the room tackling both unsub and hostage to the ground. He managed to push the woman away to crawl to safety and then had the other man pinned and cuffed after a brief struggle.]
It’s over Martin, you’re under arrest.
[He hears people bust in yelling as he’s pulling the man up and makes his way to the cop cars waiting outside.]
