Dinner tonight cost s/. 40.50 for five people. That's about 12.50 American, total. Four of us had a two-course set menu that included a drink and a dessert. I finally tried Lomo Saltado, a popular Peruvian dish of sauteed pork with onions, red peppers, parsley, vinegar, and a few other things over fries, with rice on the side. Potatoes in various sauces are popular appetizers. What I had today, though, were potato pastries filled with cheese, dipped in huancaina sauce.
All the dishes I've tried have been great, but I'm really enjoying the fruits. I like them fresh, of course (the mangos are enormous, ripe, and cheap), but also in dessert form, like the maracuya and white chocolate ice cream and lucumar yogurt. I've also learned that the purple corn from which the drink chicha morada is made is very healthy, and very high in antioxidants.
I like to try new produce each time I go to the store, which, sadly, is about every other day since it's probably closer to my house than the Giant is to home. I tried something that looked like a cross between an apple and a pear, with dimples, but it turned out rather bland and salty. I think some of these things are better used in cooking, or prepared with other flavors.
