I was excited and delighted when I heard on NPR this morning, on the drive to work, that Pope Benedict has rolled back the late pope's change to the rule requiring a two-thirds majority in a papal election (that is, he has restored the old rule). Sure, it's a tad arcane if you're not both a political junkie and a Catholic, but you know me. Pleased, surprised, impressed, interested, hopeful! Next time, as before this last time, there must be a two-thirds majority no matter the number of ballots. Next time, as before this last time, there will be no structural nudge to give in early to a mere majority. Of course, it's not as simple as the radio blurb made out; there's a new provision for a run-off after thirty-odd ballots, replacing the simple majority provision, about which I will want to learn more. Next up, perhaps, contingency plans in the case of incapacitation short of death given the circumstances of modern medicine? Before they're needed, this time, I hope. One little step at a time.
