In aired order, "The Fix" came before "Near Death." But in production order, now immortalized on the DVDs, "Near Death" (with the McCallum Neurological Institute) precedes "The Fix" (with Natalie's "old friend Whitiker at the Institute").
Speculation: Natalie's friend Whitaker with the tunneling electron microscope works at the McCallum Neurological Institute. Plausible? They certainly look well-funded in "Near Death," and the intial interview with the administrator makes it clear that the team studying consciousness states is only one of many research teams.
