Design exercise (semi-serious; planning HW upgrades for 6 month-1 year time frame -- probably phased).
echoweaver and I are considering upgrading our increasingly vintage video set up, aiming for a consolidated home theater-ish rig with a networked media server and game setup. Here are the design goals:
- Modern, flat-screen TV. Size appropriate for an about 15'x20' living room. Probably a little bigger than our current 27".
- Appropriate audio for same.
- Integrates w/ our current (paid off lifetime) TiVo.
- Accepts cable feed; flexible about other feeds.
- Media server. Optimally, can route media via WiFi to any room in the house.
- Suggestions on networking/WiFi options. (Note: have been out of the market and not paying attention >> 1 year -- not sure what current SOA is.)
- Game integration: at least our current Wii; probably at least one other modern game console to come.
- A truly universal "universal" remote that can drive all of the above.
- Remote controllability via inet also a plus (e.g., programming TiVo and/or media server).
- Probably other cool features that I haven't even thought to ask about yet. Suggestions?
- Oh yeah -- not break the bank. :-)
Hardware we can recycle/incorporate:
- Current Wii
- Current TiVo
- Echo's old G5 PowerMac tower. It's a beast, but with good networking can live in a closet, out of the way. Plenty of bays to drop lots of modern, sweet hard drives on it. It should be fast enough to serve data. Configuration suggestions welcome.
Thoughts? Suggestions on specific hardware, software, configurations, issues to consider, issues I haven't thought about yet, etc. all welcome.
