i'm at the station babysitting the board during a volleyball game. (this is mostly irrelevant, but helps to set the scene.) i realize that i am thirsty and some water would be a nice thing to drink. i head to the water fountain, but as i pass the coffee station i realize it would be nice to have a cup of water. so i stop to grab a cup.
then i remember how many many seconds it takes to fill a cup with water from the water fountain, and how you can never get the cup all the way full because of the angle you must maintain in order to get water in the cup.
sometime between last week and this, the station acquired a keurig coffee maker, which solves the problem of having to make a whole pot of coffee when you want just a cup. looking at the keurig i thought, "aha! there's a convenient method of filling a cup with water. i'll just place the cup under the spout and press the brew button." i set the cup in place and wandered off.
some moments later, i returned to the coffee station to check the status of my cup-filling project. the cup didn't quite look full, but no water was emanating from the spout. i picked up the cup to see whether anything had happened.
and thus did i spill hot water spilled over my hand and the counter. apparently, the reason the cup didn't look full was because the water was clear. seeing the inner walls of the cup through the water somehow lead my brain to overlook the fact that the cup was in fact dangerously full. i wiped water off the counter and my hand. then picked the cup up again, more carefully this time, to take a sip.
and thus did i burn my tongue, the shock of which action causing me to spill more hot water on the counter and my hand. apparently, water that is hot to the touch is also hot to the taste, and not really pleasant to drink before enough cooling time has passed. and the cup was still full. i again wiped water off the counter and my poor abused hand.
i picked the cup up again, carefully, carefully spilled some of the water into the trash bin, then carefully set the cup down again to wait for the water to cool.
i do think the cup has more water in it now than it would have if i'd filled it from the water fountain. i'm still thirsty.
