i'd always just kind of assumed that john cage was a black man. possibly this is because i first heard about cage from a jazz musician and so i assumed he was an avant jazz musician and in my head all avant jazz musicians look like milford graves. or maybe it's because when i heard about 4′33″, i just envisioned an afro'd black man sitting at the piano determinedly refusing to play and i liked that picture. whatever the reason behind the assumption, i just ran with it.
recently, though, it's occurred to me that i might need to re-examine my thought. today, as i listened to a story on cage that aired during 'to the best of our knowledge', i began to mull over the dates and details and had to admit that john cage was most likely not black. a quick visit to the wikipedia page has just confirmed this. still, i am satisfied to note that john cage
does look just a bit like milford graves,
right around the beard-line.
