shopping for joy

On Tuesday, I went to Target looking for the specialty light bulb that my living room lamp requires (since the ceiling light fixtures decided to up and stop working on me).  While I was there, I detoured through the hosiery department.  Because I figured, 'Hey, a black man has just been elected president.  Maybe I can take a chance on some thigh-high socks.'  (I'm wearing them today and, apparently, the next thing I need to take a chance on is garters.)

From there I was drawn to the shoe department.  Started scouring the aisles looking for clearance/sale items.  Since the 'summer of the dress,' I have been harboring a quiet longing for saddle shoes.  On Tuesday, I found these, which are kind of like the next best thing.  And from the Mizrahi line, and my size, and red-tagged, so I totally got them.

(Another thing I gained on Tuesday is a bit of an understanding of the ankle boot.  They didn't quite make sense to me before, but now I consider that they might be the perfect thing to wear with really long socks.)

Alas, I did not find the light bulb.  And I was late for my next engagement (post-election party hosted by mizcrank), so I skedaddled.

In the parking lot downtown, looking at building's from their back-ends, I tried to figure out which restaurant to head to.  I heard Obama's victory speech blaring from a TV and headed that way.  Turned out to be coming from the back patio of an Irish bar.  I was rather surprised, but maybe the Irish really do consider Obama to be one of them.  Walked from the patio into the building, trying to find the street-side exit.  Received kind assistance from a seemingly-tipsy stranger and finally found my way to Miz C's shindig.

She didn't win a council seat this time around.  It's too bad really.  In some ways it seems Obama and those in his wake are the only ones who did really well on Election Day.  (I got a traffic ticket which made me late to work on a day I might actually have been early, or at least on time.)  But then I remember the shoes.

My accomplishments for this week:

- Made it on time to work on Wednesday.
- Found a light bulb for my lamp (at the 24-hour Walgreens) and now have lighting in the living room.
- ...

I'm irrationally proud of the light bulb thing.

Oh!  And I now own a hammer.  Also, I voted.  I guess that counts as an accomplishment.

While in Target, I called my dad (who's a political junky even in non-historic times).  He sounded happy (pretty rare these days) and amazed.  Perhaps the Obama victory will give him a lift.  I hope it can be so.
