I agree that people are much better off learning to swim when young... A lot of my friends who've gotten into triathlon are freaked by the swimming leg of the race and never quite develop the comfort or skill to do anything other than just slog through the swim.
I'm glad for the happy post! Very cool that you have a promising new friend! :)
You really really made me want to swim now. I haven't been swimming for ages. Maybe I should ask Lee if he wants to go with me when he gets home. Or some other day, it might be a little too late today.
Couldn't you find a soccer team for adult who just wanna play to exercise and have some fun?
There's a free gym AND a free pool in walking distance!?!?! That's AWESOME!!! Everything is so expensive here. There's no such thing as free gyms and free pools anywhere.
It's awesome that you got yourself a new friend. Keep that up!
No, Ashwin can't swim. He took required lessons in college, but I'm not sure what they managed to teach him.
The gym and pool are probably technically not "free," but paid for with our rent. But they feel free.
In my experience, adults who just want to have fun and exercise pick sports other than soccer. I've been looking for low-level volleyball like I did for a year back home, but I think the problem with a big city is there are enough really good people that they drive the level of play in any group up, which then drives the less-good people out, whether intentionally or not.
Lee got home sooner than I thought he would, so I convinced him to go swimming with me. It was really nice!
Required swimming lessons in college!?!? You're required to take swimming lessons in college!? I was required to take swimming lessons i 3rd and 4th grade, but they'd never do anything like that at a university in Denmark, unless you're studying sports or something like that.
Oh, it's that kind of pool and gym. I thought you had public pools and gyms that were free... Which would be really weird, but really nice.
I guess you're right about sport teams and big cities. It's a shame, really, because I'm sure lots of people would benefit from exercising in a fun way, instead of having to go to a gym...
Some important guy's kid drowned a while back, so he convinced a bunch of colleges to require swim lessons (or passing a swim test). Not all colleges do it. I never had to take swim lessons in school. We took them at the town pond, though.
