I really think, in the bottom of my hopeful cynical heart, that yesterday will go down as an epic where were you day. You know, the big historical events that where you were, what you were doing remain imprinted on your brain forever. I like to hope, one day forty or so years from now, I can tell my inquistive grandchildren where I was when Barack Obama became President of the United States.
I digress, but reading political blogs today, I got a little gleeful giggle reading things like "President Obama issued his first presidential directive" or "President Obama meets with military leadership".
I watched the inauguration in the dinning room at work, with about 50 people....residents, nurses, administrative staff. Besides the loud cheer when he took the oath, the one activities lady dancing, my big, big memory is a little one......there is this 90 year old or so wizened little old black lady, who is still remarkably aware. She can barely communicate, but she gets around, she can react to think, she knows where she is, and when Obama was inaugrated and speaking, she was in tears.....
just a touching reminder of how deep an impact yesterday was.......I know it meant the world to me, but I also know for a lot of people, there was a special power to yesterday. For a black mother or father who grew up when racism was much more virulent, who grew up with stories from their mothers and fathers about how truly awful the treatment was.....to be able to truly tell their children that as of yesterday, there was absolutely nothing that they couldnt do if they put there minds to it....
powerful stuff
let me just say it one more time.........
President Obama
nice!
