*drum roll*
And now, for the long awaited and much anticipated (at least on my part) manifesto-of-sorts:
Alright, so I’m sure that you guys might have heard me talking about this thing lately. This thing called Newsies.
You have, right? I sure hope so, because my fangirly flailing is still going on. I haven’t flailed this hard since the whole epic!fic first started, way back in the day when The Backhouse was born and I discovered my fandom family.
So yes, this is pretty big. No, not as big, because The Boys are my one twu lurve. But The Newsies Boys? Oh man, they’re running an extremely close second.
And why you ask? (You guys did ask, just reminding you.) Why, I’d be more than happy to tell you!
Introduction
It all starts with one domino. A very very (veryveryveryvery) mad-sexy-fine domino that is usually called Christian Bale. And we must start with this specific domino because that’s how I started. Which means I need to explain why I find Christian Bale so drop-dead mad-sexy-fine.
There. That’s all I need to explain.
Oh, alright. I’ll add some adjectives. Hot. Amazing body. Accent. Captivating actor. The Prestige. Batman. That wonderful smile. His eyes.
Can I stop now?
Alright, continuing. So I’ve established that, yes, I was first drawn to Newsies because of my fatal attraction the Bale. But what sucked me in?
You know that feeling you get when you watch something seriously sparkly and ridiculous and wonderful and silly and shame-worthy and childish and oh alright I’ll just come out and say it.
You know how sometimes you feel all guilty about liking High School Musical? Or, well, I sometimes feel all guilty about liking High School Musical? Because I’m almost 20 and my friends all hate it and think it’s dumb? And because I kind of really detest Zac Efron (although, dear LORD that boy is mighty fine)?
But once the movie starts going and the music starts playing and the people start dancing I’m able to throw all that guilt out the window and get into the moment of the movie (only occasionally stopping to mock or make fun of some of the seriously silly aspects of it *cough*Troyella*cough*)?
Well, this is how I felt the first time I watched Newsies. Except. Except.
No guilt. None whatsoever. I’m perfectly happy to tell anyone I know and anyone I meet and random strangers on the street that I, yes I, am a complete and total Newsies fanatic. I can sing all the words to the songs, I can tell you details about the actors, I can point out bloopers and silly instances that only fans’ eyes can see.
And why? Well, honestly, I don’t know. Possibly because I genuinely adore all of the characters and the plot isn’t about high school drama and because there’s just so much eye candy that I think I’ve got four cavities already just thinking about it. But regardless, I am a shameless fangirl for all things Newsies. And I’m not afraid to say so (although by now my RL friends are holding their heads and wishing I’d just shut up about it all).
The Movie
”Even though we ain’t got hats or badges, we’re a union just by saying so.”
(from "The World Will Know")
So maybe I should take some time to talk about the movie itself. The story is actually a pretty good one, with your basic good versus evil, underdog takes down the big guy. The time period is 1899, the place is New York City (see? I was meant to fall in love with this movie!). The group of people are the newsboys - boys who buy the papers from the publishers and then sell them to the public. Most of these newsboys live together in lodging houses; some are homeless runaways and/or orphans.
And so these boys do all they can (lie, fib, liven up) to sell their “papes.” They’re already having trouble making ends meet when Mr. Pulitzer decides to save money by raising the prices on the papes they sell to the newsboys.
So what do the newsboys do? They strike.
The Characters
Here’s where it gets fun. Because, you see, the characters are seriously the best part. In the Newsies fandom, the spotlight seems to shine even more so on characters that rarely have lines in the film.
We'll start with a familiar face, though.
David: My father taught us not to lie.
Jack: Well, my father taught me not to starve, so I guess we both got an education.
Jack Kelly is really freaking hot the supposed main character. He's your typical archetypal main character in the senses that 1) he's a natural leader, 2) he's a charmer with charisma coming out of his ears, 3) he's got a secret past that leads to later conflict, 4) he strives towards leaving for his dream destination/life, 5) at some point he succumbs to the forces of evil and turns his back against his friends, 6) he ends up saving the day at the end and getting the boy the girl who was only put into the movie to lower the gayocity of it all.
In all actuality, Jack probably isn't the best guy in the world. He lies about nearly everything - his headlines, his name, his family. But even though he's conceited and dishonest and even a momentary traitor, he still cares about his boys and his cause and everything he should (I mean, it's a Disney movie after all - what do you expect?). He's the undeclared leader of the Manhattan newsies and he's loved by nearly all including David me.
Jack: But, if we go on strike, then we are a union, right?
David: No! We're just a bunch of angry kids with no money.
David Jacobs is Jack's lover boyfriend wife the second main character. Unlike the rest of the boys, David is not a newsie. With his father out of work due to an arm injury, David (with his adorable little brother Les) tries to help out his family by foregoing school and selling papes. He's the typical Jew practical, logical, intellectual one. When Jack (quite literally) runs into him, David immediately puts up his guards. He sees through Jack's attempts of swindling him and his brother by becoming partners and splitting the earnings unevenly (although David does end up settling with 60/40, not in his favor). As Jack tries to rile the boys up with his speech about "Pulitzer's a jerk! Let's strike! And anyone who doesn't follow us we'll beat up!" David tries to rationalize the potential impossibility of it all - and ends up being the words behind Jack's encouraging voice.
Somehow David ends up being Jack's right hand man and his personal "walking mouth." And somehow they fall in love get close enough for Jack to come over and meet David's family, for David to risk his life breaking Jack out of the Refuge (kind of like a juvenile hall for troubled street kids), for David to feel betrayed and heartbroken when he finds out that Jack had lied to David about nearly everything about him.
Throughout the movie, David changes from an uptight do-gooder to a more street-smart and confident newsie. He's basically the passionate-for-justice-and-what's-right force that drives the rest of the characters across the line of victory.
Racetrack: You know that hot tip I told you about?
Jack: Yeah.
Racetrack: Nobody told the horse.
Racetrack Higgins: the best character, ever cigar toting, gambling wise guy. Although more of a minor character, Racetrack totally steals the show wins all the attention - oh, alright - totally steals the show and wins all the attention. Not that I'm biased or anything, although I'm probably a little bit completely and utterly biased.
But honestly - can you blame me? As one of Jack's very good friends, Race is the one with the quick tongue, the proud demeanor (for a guy who's probably only 5'3), and the brilliantly friendly smile that seriously melts my heart, and the best lines in the whole movie.
Racetrack: Look at this! "Baby Born with Two Heads"... must be from Brooklyn.
Blink: Hey bummas, we'se got work to do!
(From "Carrying The Banner")
My second favorite character. Also a minor part - he in fact does not have very many lines at all. But does it really matter? His face is all over the place constantly, whether it's a dance number or a singing number or just a scene of the boys. Blink is the rambunctious boy with the endearing eye patch. He's adorable and he's fantastic at those pelvis thrusts. (No, I'm not kidding. I haven't mentioned the pelvis thrusts yet? Oh, God:
HECK YES, I LOVE IT SO)
Mush: Howd'ya sleep, Jack?
Jack: On me back, Mush.
First of all, please take a moment to observe the uncovered upper body of Mr. Mush.
Yes. Delicious. (And, also, take note of the fact that the boy he's giving that look to is in fact Blink. We'll get back to this later...) Besides the very nice body, Mush's character is minor yet just as important. Not many lines, but like Blink he's everywhere. More of a cute and nice character, Mush has always struck me as the fluffy innocent-like one. Like his name implies, Mush is kind of all mushy on the inside. Full of feelings and happiness.
Spot: Your honor, I object.
Judge: On what grounds?
Spot: On the grounds of Brooklyn, your honor.
The first time I watched Newsies, the only thing I could think when I watched scenes with Spot was, "OMG, THAT SPOT KID IS REALLY REALLY HOT!!" And, well, he is.
Spot is the cliche bad boy BAMF of the movie secret boyfriend of Racetrack leader of the Brooklyn newsies. As the slingshot wielding, cane carrying pimp bad ass newsie leader, Spot don't take nothing he don't wanna from no one. Seeing as Spot is feared and respected by the rest of the New York newsies, Jack knows that in order to gain any support from the other gangs of newsies he's got to have Spot's support.
Jack: So, what about Brooklyn? Who wants Brooklyn? C'mon, Spot Conlon's territory.
[the newsies look at each other]
Jack: Whats'a matta, you scared of Brooklyn?
Boots: Hey, we ain't scared of Brooklyn!
[pauses]
Boots: Spot Conlon makes us a little nervous.
Spot's roost is the docks - which allows some "wet boys swimming in the river, water dripping all over their half naked bodies" shots - and he's not at all convinced that Jack and his crew have what it takes to fight till the end. But he joins in anyway (probably convinced by David's speech of confidence or Race's pleading and begging and promises of sexual favors), saving the day at all the right moments.
In fact, let's meet Spot:

*swoons*
Skittery: So what? So you get your picture in the papes - what's that getcha, huh?
Mush: What're ya talkn' about?
Jack: You've been in a bad mood all day.
[Race smacks Skittery in the face]
Race: Glum and dumb - was'a matta with you?
I have this soft spot for Skitts. I think it's because he's terribly gorgeous and adorable, especially in those pink long underwears. Skittery doesn't have very many lines, and would in most cases be considered unimportant. But in Newsies, no matter how small a part, every character counts.
The rest of the characters that I consider important to consider I'm going to just list names and pictures of - only because I didn't really notice them the first few times watching the movie and because I constantly had to pull up pics of them when reading their names in the fandom.
I can't even begin to tell you how impatient I'm getting. I totally just want to be able to puke out all this information at you. GRAWARARARARA!!! Okay, back to the rest of the stuff...
Oh Yeah, There's Other People In The Movie, Too
Denton: The reporter who takes interest in the plight of the newsboys. Mr. Denton is a good man.
Sarah: David's sister. She's useless has nearly no characterization a cover-up for Jack's gayocity annoying as hell around.
The Delancy Brothers: Morris and Oscar. They're scabbers who work behind the window, selling papes to the boys. They're smelly jerks.
Crutchy: Wow, I'm a jerk. I totally forgot that this kid exists. He's the crippled newsie. And honestly? I don't like him very much at all. Please don't hate me.

The Spoof
Okay, let me start off by explaining that when I begin a new obsession, I throw myself into it. That means wikipedia gets a workout and my brain gets filled with all sorts of useless knowledge about actors and all their movies and other works and favorite childhood memories and other randomness.
Example? Trey Parker - who plays Kid Blink - was in a three man boy band a few years after Newsies. Express Yourself Clearly (better known as E.Y.C.) obviously did not make it big, but I currently have all the songs I can find on my computer. And, yes. I listen to them. And enjoy them. *facepalm*
So, anyways, perusing sites and whatnot of course had me stumble upon the Spoof.
"Blood Drips On Newsies Square." Epic For The Win.
Taking straight from the site (
located here): This 25 minute, homemade, newsies horror-film spoof, was made in 1991 on the back lot of Universal Studios during the shooting of the movie “Newsies”.
The movie directed by Michael Goorjian (Skittery), produced by Max Casella (Racetrack) and Trey Parker (Blink) and shot by Ivan Dudynsky (Dutchy). It stars Mark David (Specs) doing an incredible impersonation of actor Don Knots (Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show.) Ivan, Trey, Max and Michael are also in the film along with cameos by Christian Bale (Jack), David Moscow (David), Bill Pullman, Kenny Ortega, Brett Dieball as well as many more.
THE STORY: Washed up actor Don Knots shows up on the back lot of Universal Studios in hopes of a role in the new movie, Newsies. Unfortunately director Kenny Ortega quickly dismisses Mr. Knots and has him thrown off the lot. Mr. Knots then decides to go on a killing spree. He knocks off one Newsie after the next, each in a different and unique way.
I demand that you watch this. Because, seriously? I thought I was going to die from laughter. It was that amazing. It made me fall even more in love with the minor characters/actors of Newsies.

The Fandom
*does a happy dance*
FINALLY!!! What I've been SO freaking excited to get to, finally here!!
Obviously, when you've got a whole gaggle of gay boys a group of boys dancing and touching and singing and smacking and hitting and smiling and hugging each other around and about, you're gonna get everybody some people wondering about a little thing that I like to call sexuality.
Or, well, okay - the whole world likes to call it sexuality. But you get my point.
I'll cover the three main pairings that I adore with all my being see throughout the fandom.
The "Push You Up Against The Wall/Don't You Lie To Me Ever Again!" Married Couple
This is the most obvious of the many possible pairings found throughout the movie. You've got two boys who, although differ in many ways, seem to get along swimmingly and quickly become extremely fond of each other.
And yes, these two even have what is dubbed The Balcony Scene:
David: Jack…why don’t you stay here tonight?

poisonivory's manifesto
Proud and Defiant.
The "King Of Brooklyn" Falls For the "Wise-Guy Gambler"
Totally my OTP, forever and ever and ever and ever!!!!!
Although this pairing is a little bit harder to see while watching the movie - they never come in physical contact and aren't usually in scenes together - it's through the few scenes they are together and evaluation of their personalities that makes it so easy to pair them up. With Spot's arrogance and leadership position and Racetrack's witty tongue and risk-taking, these two boys actually mesh very well together.

second_batgirl's manifesto
Gambling, Canes, and Head Nods.
The Drink-Sharing, Constantly-Touching, Cutest-Couple-Award-Winning Pair
I don't even know where to begin with these two. There's the constant touching and eye-waggling and the fact that they're always next to each other. In the "King of New York" scene, they even share a glass when a toast is held. Remember the cap earlier? The one of Mush giving a look? Well, what else can I say?
For an in depth analysis of the Blush romance, check out
queenitsy's manifesto
Matching Outfits for Him and Him They Ain't The Only Ones
Although those are the three most common pairings that I see and read, there are still many other loved couples as well. Skittery/Snitch for example. And Dutchy/Specs.
Different mash-ups also include Blink/Race (sometimes known as Blinktrack), Jack/Spot, and Skittery/Race. Anything goes in this fandom.
Fic Recs
Here's where things get a little complex. In the Newsies-verse, there seems to be an overwhelming amount of Modern Day fic. And although I was skeptical at first, wondering how all these people could so easily take characters out of their original timeline and context, I was quickly convinced otherwise.
We'll start here, because it's seriously this fic that made me want to stay in this fandom forever and ever:
Everything You've Done Wrong by
queenitsy (also known as B and studentnumber24601) and FunkieChick: Racetrack's father is in the mafia, and it colors his whole life. Slash, drugs and rock'n'roll. Seriously, amazing characterization and fast paced and hot and sweet and perfect in every kind of way. I started reading this shortly after wandering into the fandom (because the Javid was so obvious in the film) and seeing this recced all over the place. At first I was a little uneasy. Why were these people writing about minor characters that I didn't know much about? Why am I still reading this after five chapters? Why am I suddenly obsessed with Sprace and Blush and in love with all these characters? Because these girls are just that freaking good, that's why. Involves Sprace, Blush and platonic(although-still-so-gay)!Javid.
And there's MORE!
Prequel:
Take Good Care of the Poor Boy: Jack Kelly never wanted a brother, and Sean Conlon didn't want any friends. Neither boy got what he wanted.
Sequel-of-Sorts:
EYDW Universe community: Where snippets and segments are posted every so often about the future of the characters the readers have fallen in love with.
Other fantastic Modern Day fics that should be read:
Sharps and Flats by
cymbalism219: College is more than just classes: David joins the marching band at his new university never suspecting how crucial his presence will be, and Blink's crush on his best friend changes everything. Adorable and fun. The characterization is great and so much detail. Still a work in progress. Involves Blush and Javid.
Behind Blue Eyes by
clio21000: Racetrack's senior year of college is filled with challenges from people and places he never expected, starting with his new roommate, Sean. Great characterization and awesome intrigue. Sprace.
Maternal Instinct by D_Mos: Javid mpreg. What more do you need? FUNNIEST THING I think I've read EVER. Like, seriously? I wish I could write crack like this. I was rolling on the floor in tears. Fantastic. Javid, Sprace and Blush.
["But wait! I'm reading Modern Day fic and they've got real names!!! What's going on?!?!" Yes. This subject has been talked about on The Refuge forum boards
here (I know this because I'm a creepy stalker/lurker). Because I read EYDW before anything else, I do prefer the names used there (Race as Tony, Spot as Sean, Blink as Ryan, Mush as Michael/Mikey/Mike) as well as a good chunk of the fandom. But of course there are many other variations. It all depends on the author's choice.]
And, of course, not to be ignored are the fabulous 1899-era fics out there (because, really, I have a bit time weakness for 1899-era fics):
VAUDEVILLE! by
hilaryscribbles: The guys are all grown up and working in dance halls. And stuff. OH MY GOD. FANTASTIC AND AMAZING. There are almost not enough words on the planet to tell you how much this fic has stolen my heart. If EYDW is the winner of all-time best Modern Day fic, then this is the winner of all-time best 1899-era fic. Seriously, though, the characterization is unbelievable and the plot is thick and juicy. And the love and angst and drama is all so mind-blowing and heart-wrenching. GUH. This fic is love in so many ways. Blush, Sprace and Snittery. (Also, this is F-Locked. Become friends with this fantastic chick so you can read it!)
All That Remains by
Lielabell: Spot and Race's relationship grows and changes over the years. Beautiful and fantastically written. Starts before the strike and is slowly working it's way forward (it's a work in progress). Brilliant characterization and so sweet and hot. Sprace.
The Wages of Sin by
lielabell: There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there are brothels. A terribly amazing closer look at some of the characters. It's probably one of the most in-character stories I think I've read, one that feels like it could be canon. Involves unrequited Blush and roundabout Javid.
