Cue Whirling Spiral Background Behind my Head.

I just had a horrifying thought.

McCain-Palin. It's not about skimming the PUMAs cream out of the dem's hands, it's not about dominionist Xtianity making their first real Machiavellian power grab, it's not even about pandering to the base. Well, no, that's not true, that is sort of what it is about. But its a different base than I figured.

I just took a look at our free morning propaganda rag newssheet, which has a charming little portrait of the GOP ticket radiating off of it, and the first thing I thought of was:

"Good jesus. They're a domcom couple."

All this time, I've had this little bit of cognitive dissonance about McCain, a petty thing really. He just didn't look like a president. Or a politician, for that matter. It was a fluke, a gag, some kind of goober-tastic Gomer-Pyle quirk of chance that he was even in politics much less a presidential candidate. I've just been waiting for him to wheedle, "Well Golllllleeee". He looks like the guy in church who's best known for his friendly, bad jokes and sort of reasonable barbecue. The guy who runs the water treatment plant or the manager of a outside-sales office for a security-alarm company. Innocuous, bland, utterly average and banal in his self-assured place in the world.

Which is, I think, the point. He reminds WASP America of itself. He speaks their language of "plain english" and "common sense" and "gut feelings". Even when the issues and the problems of contemporary America actually require a high degree of critical thought and specialist knowledge. It's like calling a plumber to deal with a malfunctioning cooling tower at a nuclear plant.

"How different could it be?"

And Palin. Well, I think others are commenting on her more adroitly than I ever could. I'll just say that if you put her next to McCain, you get this feeling like he's the bumbling, well-meaning husband/dad next to her caring, supportive, but carefully-guiding companion (anyone's guess if that is supposed to be "wife" or "daughter"). Shit, looking at the framing of their photography, I'm wondering if the Shipping has already begun between the two.

Suddenly eight years of idiotic, brain-numbing broadcast television is coming into a terrible, bloodchilling, and soul-crushing clarity. Lo, I can feel the texts clickity-clackiting between the neocons and their recently pupating spawn:

"OMG DID U C THT LK BTWN MCC/PAL? UST! LOLZ! MCC/PAL OTP, FTW!1!!"

No, really. We are actually that stupid.

*facepalm*
