Little things

I thought I would share a few things I've observed around the city over the past couple of weeks that have been heartwarming, interesting, or just bizarre:

-- The homeless woman who tore off parts of her sandwich to feed the pigeons.

-- A man standing on the pedestrian median during the middle of rush hour, lifting hand weights (about 10 lbs I'd guess). He'd do a set of 5 reps on one arm, then 5 on the other. He wasn't taking money or anything: just stood there lifting weights.

-- A woman who was dressed like what you'd imagine a stereotypical gypsy to be, speaking in tounges in front of the Republican National Committee.

-- An Amish family in front of the Air and Space Museum.

-- A guy on the metro who had shoe laces IN HIS ARM. His arm gave the appearance of the top of a football. Hooks were embedded in his skin, and the shoe laces criss-crossed along the forearm to make his arm look like a football.

-- Spotting Sam Donaldson walking downtown.

And one more...

This week we've experienced gorgeous weather, which is very rare in DC at the end of August/early September. I decided one day to walk home from my office. The route takes me along the National Mall, where many tourists hang out. I was walking past one of the food carts, where a mother was trying to make a decision of what to get her kids. She had 3 by her; the two boys were tugging on her, spouting off their food orders. Her little stood behind her, watching people go by. As I walked past the booth, and past the little girl, she smiled at me, put out her hand, and gave me a tiny flower. As soon as she gave it to me, she smiled again, and ran behind her distracted mother. I don't think anyone else saw that sweet gesture, but it sure made my day.
