I have a theory that the communal spirit and seasonal feelings of closeness that seem to well up around Christmas/[insert your festival here] are fuelled by the glue that they put on self-sealing envelopes, and that as the nights draw in, and frost turns the branches to bare crystalline fingers, tiny pixies break into offices across the country, stealing this glue and carrying it off in ornately-carved, rustic oaken barrels. And this is why none of my bloody envelopes will sodding well seal today.

It’s possible that this theory may not withstand closer scrutiny.
