Hello. I am pretty much permanently on the point of melting into a little puddle of goo but I figured I'd use this time to do something I've been meaning to do for a while, which is a Spanish music dump.
Amaral
THEY ARE MY FAVOURITES. My absolute favourites forever. They're from Zaragoza and it seems like a city pastime to big them up, just constantly. Spanish people seem to have a lot more city pride than English people. Amaral are one of the biggest acts in Spain at the moment (I think: my view of big acts is warped because of just how huge they are in Zaragoza) and they're awesome. Wikipedia in Spanish and English describe them as folk. I...guess that's accurate? idk, I would pretty much firmly place them as pop. But good pop! The band is composed of Eva Amaral and Juan Aguirre. I love them and possibly have a crush on both of them.
A friend of mine told me that Aguirre lives near us and my greatest wish is to see him wandering the streets near my house. However, I fear that he could probably disguise himself from me forever just by taking off that hat. I would never recognise him ;_;
Their most recent album is a double album.
Gato Negro-
Dragon Rojo I uploaded both halves separately, but mostly for size reasons. You should download both of them. I love this album insanely. The first is more upbeat and the second is more ballady, I guess, though both have a mixture.
Example songs:
Tarde de domingo rara,
El artista del alambre. Both songs are in the zips, so if you're downloading those, you don't need these. They're just representative of the album. Also Tarde de domingo rara is just one of my favourite songs in the world ever and I have rarely associated a song so strongly with a period of my life as I relate this song to this year. Dan el mundial en la tele del bar! España vuelve a casa! YO JUEGO A FUTBOLIN CONTIGO!
Pajaros en la cabeza The album before Gato Negro-Dragon Rojo. I don't love it as much because I don't love anything as much but it's still awesome because they're awesome.
Marta, Sebas, Guille y los demas: it took me ages to find this song on my computer because in my head it's called "Son mis amigos." It's in the zip above. Eva Amaral has a habit of writing songs which basically tell stories about her life, and I adore that. This is a song where she talks about her friends and how awesome they are. It's also bittersweet because at the end she talks about how she lost contact with some of them. Tarde de domingo rara is another song where she basically tells a story. It means the lyrics can be kind of weird to sing (why do I want to sing about her friend Sebas going to Argentina?) but I also like self-referential songs and in this one she talks about Aguirre playing the guitar in the room next door. It's just awesome, okay?
Toda la noche en la calle: This song isn't on either of those albums but I like it too. She's got this real gift for writing songs you just want to sing along to at the top of your lungs. This one, for instance, makes me want to sing the title over and over again.
El Canto del Loco
Personas Their 2008 album. I find this guy to have a really distinctive voice which I enjoy a lot. Their music is supposedly rock but it's more power pop. Like, slightly rocky, but still pretty much pop. I like pop music in Spanish, what can I say?
Peter Pan: this is in the zip above. They filmed the video in England and I remember the first time I watched it because I was so confused until I figure out that, obviously, Peter Pan, England.
La Chica de Ayer: Not on the album. It's a cover of the Nacho Pop song by the same name in the 80s. I heard this version first so it's the one I like best.
Juanes
He's the one I'm pretty sure people might have heard of, if they've heard of anyone in this post. He's from Columbia and his songs definitely have more of a Latin rhythm than the pop of Amaral or El Canto.
Un Dia Normal His first album.
A Dios Le Pido is a good example of it, and also the song that my sister used to learn the subjunctive in Spanish. So...there's that?
Mi Sangre I bought this album for my sister from Argentina and I listened to it the whole time I was travelling. Another set of songs which I associate with a time of my life.
La Camisa Negra is the most famous song from this album; I even think it came out in England, so you might recognise it.
I have his most recent album if you want it, but I don't like it as much.
Fito y Fitipaldis
Lo Mas Lejos A Tu Lado I don't really have much to say about them. They're Basque? They write pop songs? I like them? I listened to this song in my conversation class in first year:
La casa por el tejado Nena Daconte
I think she either won or came close to winning Operacion Triunfo over here (basically Fame Academy). She has this song,
Tenia tanto que darte, which will earworm itself inside your head and never leave, ever.
Retales de Carnaval This is the album. I actually really like it, it has a couple of sweet little tracks at the end which aren't what you'd expect from that first single.
Melendi
Que El Cielo Espere Sentao I would have sworn this dude was from somewhere in South America but I googled him and he's actually from Oviedo in the north of Spain. I get the impression that he's a pothead. idk what that will tell you to expect from his music.
Caminando por la vida: This is on that album. I enjoy singing this song in my head as I walk down the street, because sometimes you just are walking along without stopping but not being in a hurry.
Tapon
Strongly angling for most difficult to google band (tapon means lid in Spanish), the only thing I know about this band is that they're reggae and they're from Costa Rica.
Para el Mundo I stole this from a friend of mine; it's disk one of two of what I assume is a greatest hits album. If you want the other one, just shout.
Baileme is your example song from this album.
As ever, delete the music after 24 hours so we don't all get shipped off to prison and if you like any of it, you can buy it online:
Amaral (also
here),
El Canto del Loco,
Juanes (also
here),
Fito y Fitipaldis,
Nena Daconte,
Melendi,
Tapon.
If there's any other Spanish music you think I might have, give me a shout and I'll see if I can upload it for you.
