Take a baring off the crystal, paddle like crazy, take another baring off the crystal, paddle like crazy, take another baring off the crystal... It spun around... Odd. It hadn't done that before. Had she gone too far and it was telling her to turn back?
She'd been guided to the right area by
Toshiko. She also knew from
Dr. Cuddy that the antidote really was an antidote. She had all the right information and tools to deal with this... She just needed Pip.
She was so close to finding him she could almost taste it. Pippi sat there for a moment and looked around. Turning to check back the way she came, she noticed a hint of the sun coming through the trees glinting off something... Was that a window? The swamps around the village were lousy with rundown old shacks. It was certainly possible.
Completely disregarding the possibility she would benefit from the element of surprise, Pippi grabbed the ore and started paddling back and loudly calling Pip's name.
Pip groaned and coughed up a little blood. The poison was a nasty one, attacking the body from within and leaving the person generally helpless.
The cabin helped keep the alligators away, at least.
Pippi pulled the boat up to the little dock as Mr. Neilson jumped off her shoulder and climbed up a nearby tree.
"Be careful." she whispered to the monkey as he skittered along a branch that stretched over the roof of the cabin.
"Pip? Are you in there?" She tried to peer through the window but there was a dingy old curtain in the way. "...I'm just checking to see if it's safe to come in. I'll be right in there. You're going to be okay."
Mr. Neilson found a hole in the roof and carefully poked his little monkey face through.
Pip groaned and looked up at Mr. Neilson.
Was he hallucinating a monkey?
It looked like he was hallucinating a monkey.
Monkey hallucinations rarely drop down onto the shoulders of the people hallucinating them going "Eep eep!" And then begin sympathetically grooming the person.
Or maybe they do.
The sound of somebody walking across the roof.
"They don't, but Pip was hardly in any condition to appreciate at that.
"Hello Mr. Monkey."
Pippi made the hole in the roof a little bigger and carefully stepped down onto one of the exposed rafters.
When she was certain it would hold her she let go of the roof and took stock of the situation.
There was some sort of booby trap on the front door and, oh thank goodness gracious, Pip who was chained up on the floor.
Chained, as in manacles.
Bastard.
She smiled down at him.
"Hey you."
"...Are you with the monkey?"
"Actually." She said crawling quickly along the rafters until she was directly over him.
"The monkey is with me..."
She waved at Mr. Neilson, who skuttled around Pip to make sure it was normal floor boards and nothing more dangerous.
"Don't you recognize us Pip?"
it kind of feels like most of my inside is on fire right now."
"I got something that... I'm sure it'll help with that.." Pippi said dropping down right next to him.
Mostly she just wanted to wrap her arms around him and never let go, but first things first. She took out and opened a little metal case containing a loaded hypodermic needle and some alcohol swabs.
"You might feel worse for a little bit but then you'll start to feel better, I promise. I had it checked."
Pip whimpered. "Just give it to me already!"
Pippi has been preparing Pip's arm for the shot as quickly as possible but she's not going to rush it and inject an air bubble into him. Once she's taken the precautions that she was taught she injects the antidote into his arm.
She sets the needle aside, brushing his hair away from his face and kisses his cheek.
"Already done. I'm going to take care of the door and then get you out of these chains."
She would have freed him first, but he seemed pretty disoriented and she was paranoid that stuff was rigged to explode in here.
Pip grit his teeth and stood up. "Fast acting," Pip said.
Oooo! He really was some kinda piece of work, wasn't he?
"Pip you sit down right now." Pippi said angrily. "You've been in here for what, two days? I don't believe for a moment you're fine."
She went over to the booby trapped door and carefully started to remove the floorboards near it.
"No, it's..." Pip coughed up some blood. "Perfectly fine. I don't want to be here when he comes back."
"You are so epically less then perfectly fine. He's probably not coming back, he's out 'playing' with El." Pippi peered with a flashlight through the hole she made and found that the trap would be very easy to disable. She cut some wires and lifted the floor boards over the trap up.
Looking back over her shoulder she said to him, "Please, just sit down."
*click*
Once the floor boards were clear a sawed off shotgun sprang up, pointing directly at Pippi's chest.
*BLAM*
She swayed slightly, anybody else would have been knocked back several feet, but she stayed kneeling there for a moment. Smoke was coming both from the double barrel of the gun and Pippi's chest.
And then she slumped over. Laying on her side with her back to Pip.
"PIPPI!" Pip tried to run forward and took a stumble.
The acrid smell of the shotgun blast lingers.
Blown off little charred wisps of Pippi's hoddy float in the air and land on the ground.
She doesn't move. Laying on her side, just barely out of reach.
Mr. Neilson had been frightened by the noise and was hiding behind Pip wimpering.
Pip grimaced as he tried to pull himself forward. "Pippi! C'mon, scatter shot. You're too tough to be killed by scatter shot!"
For entirely too long Pippi continued to just lay there, but eventually she coughed and rolled over.
She clutched at her chest, ripping the ruined hoody away and revealing an equally ruined ballistic vest that was still smoldering and a little bit on fire.
"Oh... Oh that's gonna bruise..." Pippi choked out.
Pip laughed and laughed and laughed. "...Yeah. It does. Good call on the vest." He leaned over and kissed her. "Very good call."
Things were a bit fuzzy for Pippi right now, and her ears were ringing something horrible.
But she could tell when Pip was kissing her. She reached up and touched his face, kissing him back.
When he broke for air she said softly, "Thank you for sitting down."
"Didn't really have a choice in the matter," Pip grunted. "Although..." he wrenched himself up. "We should... probably tell someone about the psychopath."
"I've told people about the psychopath."
She doesn't yet mention to him all the other psychopaths... Like it's some kind of psychopath convention.
"I just want to sit here and look at you... and maybe cry a little..."
She tore the ruined vest off.
"I guess I can do that in the boat. Let me see those chains."
Pip grinned. "Please do. They're kind of constricting. I'll hold you when I get out. Promise."
