i had a little convo on the weekend that i suppose should have some clarification. it appears as though sometimes people in fact do read these livejournal things and somehow they even have the ability to affect ones thoughts .
a friend of mine approached me and said he had a beef with a past post i had made . what he voiced, were my opinions on the, than, upcoming release of minus the bear's - menos el oso. what i had said was that if it were going to be following the same vein as their follow up ep "they make beer commercials like this.." i would have no choice but to be let down. reasong being, as artists they woulden't be stimulating their full potential. they would be more or less just doing what they have always done, and this to me, would be a let down. for them, however, who knows if they would feel the same. when it comes down to it, i suppose they are the ones creating the music they want to hear, not me.
Fortunatly (for my sake) they steered slightly away from their Ep's direction and created a different sound with all the minus the bear frills and sprinkles. so in the end we were all happy! the new album is fabulous and thats great.
I will assert however, that i still stand by my inclinations. if an artist is truly a "good" artist they will attempt to push and explore the full potential of their abilities (at least in my opinion, i don't think this is to absurd of a notion)
i heard the new Broken Social Scene, and although this is a contradiction of what i may have just said, but, I think its great. the reason i think its great, is because its essentially -more of what you love- by them. so as artists they haven't really progressed (well i suppose their sound has, but musically not much has changed) but what i will give them, is i am relativly firm that they will in fact have a much different sound for any future releases. it seems to me that, this new album follows the minus the bear 'lets make beer ..." ep philosopy, in the sense that its just the last step of one sound.
