Last night, I went to a show for the first time in ages, and it was so great! It helped, of course, that it was one of my favorite bands ever. I love Empires so ridiculously much, and I have really missed them because I hadn't seen them in months and being there and listening to them was sort of like coming home.
I arrived about half an hour after doors, so I missed the first opener, but the second band was absolutely great. They were called This Is Me Smiling and their website is
smilingmusic.com. Seriously, how cute is that? (Go to the site! There are free downloads!) I really, really liked their music, and I liked that both their guitarist and keyboardist sang and harmonized. Definitely a band to follow.
Also, Greta from The Hush Sound/Gold Motel was in the audience last night, and the keyboardist from This Is Me Smiling led the audience in a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" since it was her birthday.
And then EMPIRES came on stage, and I felt so happy! It was so good to see their faces again after such a long absence. They look just like I remember them. They played a mix of old and new songs, and I really loved the new stuff! I have to admit that I haven't been keeping track of their new releases because I am awaiting the full album, so I wasn't familiar with the new stuff other than what I'd already heard them play live before. I also was not aware that Sean had given up the keyboard and guitar and just went full-time singing, but I have to say it suits him very well. He was just so energetic and bouncing around the entirety of the small stage and looking out into the audience and he looked so happy to be there. And the rest of the band did too.
Ahhhhh, I just love them so much! ♥♥♥
After the show, we filed out into the front bar area, where the Olympics Opening Ceremony was playing on one of the TVs (with no sound), and I caught the part of it with the punk violin-playing tap dancers whose shoes set off sparks. It looked pretty great. I watched the entirety of the opening ceremony today online, and it was really great. Way to go, Canada!
Although, I must admit, I was rather surprised at their rather Gross oversight. Why was Canada's greatest national treasure not included??? I confess myself very disappointed. (If you don't know who I mean, look at my tags and then go forth and educate yourself.)
