This is amazing -- it balances on so many edges at once, between disturbing and darkly humourous, sexy and unsettling, sad and strangely sweet. You set up this landscape of whiteness and desolation, making it clear early on that Jared is isolated -- estranged from his family, old before his time -- in a way that prepares his reaction to Jensen and his rather unconventional gifts. Most people would of course panic, but Jared isn't most people.

And as always, I just want to roll around in your prose, with its gorgeous imagery and richness and rhythm:

It doesn’t move, it sits there, impersonal and imperious, commanding attention, the careful spread of it maintained with pins, as though to show the traces of I have been. I have touched and changed and arranged. It’s beautiful, even with its modest mystery stripped from it, the wanton splay of the vena cava and aorta yielding up their secrets
